Hmmm. If I were to upgrade, should I stick with good old 32 bits, or should I push the boat out further and go for x64?
I'd tell you to go 64 bit, but that's because I want everyone to go 64 bit in order to push that platform. I don't care if it doesn't work for you, go 64 bit.
I've been using the 64 bit RC as my primary OS for months and almost everything works for me, all the drivers are working and it has excellent compatibility for 32 bit software. The only thing that didn't work was the driver for my 4 year old phone, but I booted up XP mode and tried it in there and it worked a charm. If your hardware is around 2 years old it will probably have 64 bit drivers available, any older and you might have trouble.
