Happy 2nd Anniversary of "Star Trek: Discovery"!

All of this discussion is interesting but it doesn't change when I decide to celebrate something, and I intend to celebrate the anniversary every September 24th and that's when I'll start a new thread about it every year as long as we're here. That decision is final.

But I'm not going to stop someone from starting a celebratory thread for any highlight in DSC's history.

We could celebrate on multiple days! Like how the Eastern Orthodox churches celebrate Easter on a different day than churches in the West.

The thing that most impressed me was that it was like I was watching something made for the big-screen on TV. I'd never seen an episode of Star Trek with such intricate production values. The space shots when Burnham departs from the Shenzhou are breathtaking.

Then when Burnham, in her EVA suit, encounters the Klingon, it really feel like she's encountered an alien. Then we see the Klingon insignia. That's the way to reveal the enemy to Micheal Burnham.

I remember thinking the dialogue was a little clunky but that it looked incredibly slick. And here I am now, eagerly awaiting season 3.

I'd take 90s style production values for a good story and likeable characters over the production values of STD any day of the week. Good Production values would still be lipstick on a pig if the story content and characters are unable to connect with the audience. For me, its that way with STD. Not a fan of the dark action packed, and flimsy stories, hidden by a big budget and SPFX that STD seems to emphasize. Its a good way to distract the audience from poor writing. Kurtzman and JJ's company excell at that way of presenting their IPs they run.

The show has a great feel that I appreciate of being both big scale and small scale at the same time. Burnham's encounter with the Klingon is an excellent point of, where the encounter is highly personal and yet has incredibly large implications.

Actually, I'm more of a 90s industrial rock fan. TOOL is one of my favs.

I think visuals are downplayed too much. Maybe I'm biased because I'm a Videographer, but still. There's nothing like seeing something truly eye-popping. I went to see TMP for the 40th Anniversary in the theater. I gave my whole account of it here. And looking at the inside of V'Ger when its on the Big Screen is truly mesmerizing. The small screen doesn't do it any justice.

I want to be impressed by the story but I also want to be impressed by the visuals. I want the best of both worlds (). I happen to like both in Discovery. But that's just me.

I found the visuals in the first season were far too dark and grainy. The second season was a clearly visible improvement, but I don't think there was anything there I would call impressive. I'm not saying it had bad visuals, just not anything that stood out..

I would add my voice to those who think that the computer graphics can be overwrought. I also think that the writers should stop with the A and B plots. Episodes don't need three or four stories. If they have that much to say, either add five episodes to the season or carry over story arcs from season to season.

That said, Discovery's season two had enough very good-great episodes that it might be Star Trek's second best season two. New Eden, Sound of Thunder, Project Daedelus and Through the Valley show a great deal of maturity. If Memory Serves is probably one of Star Trek's twenty best episodes.

Moreover, the second season produced a deep examination of the complexities of sibling relationships. Spock and Michael may have been difficult to watch at times, but it also seems refreshingly honest, especially when compared to the curt treatment it was given in TNG's Family.
