Hannibal DVD problem?

Okay--I need to know if I'm going nuts, or I'm just really unlucky, or what.

Not long ago, I purchased a copy of Hannibal on DVD. Not a great movie, but not a bad one, and the price was right.

Then, when I watched it, I discovered what seemed like a flaw. Right at the climax of the movie--the scene where Lecter kisses Starling and she handcuffs him--there was buzzing sound, and a flicker of static on the screen.

Huh, I thought. That was weird. Well, it was only a cheap full-screen DVD--I'll buy the Hannibal Lecter collection, and get a replacement, along with two other movies, all in widescreen.

But now I just watched my new disc--and that same flicker/buzz was there again!

Does anyone else own this DVD? Have you noticed this problem? I've re-watched this scene on YouTube, and the flicker/buzz aren't there.

I'm wondering if this problem might affect only the Canadian version of the DVD. Or if, by some fluke, I managed to purchase two bad DVDs.

Yeah--if this had affected the US release, I think someone would have said something before now.

But I've googled for any mention of this problem by anyone else, and I haven't found anything.

Are you sure the buzzing noise wasn't that irritating noise Hannibal makes, as per the end of the 'fava beand and a nice Chianti' dialogue?!

Have you tried it in anyone else's DVD player? You could fast forward to that scene and see if it happens in other players. If so, you can be pretty sure it's a flaw in the disc--and if you can do it in multiple copies then obviously it's a flaw in the master and you should contact the manufacturer about it. They should be willing to replace it if it's a known issue. If not, you might have a bit of a fight of your hands--more of a fight than a budget DVD is worth, I suspect.

Quite sure.

I haven't thought of trying it on someone else's player, no. Thanks for the suggestion.

The whole rest of the movie plays fine, though, and I haven't noticed this problem with any other disc. I strongly suspect that it is a flaw in the master, as you say.

Think this needs to be merged with the "Has DVD Failed?" thread.

I had something like this once.

I'd rented season one of 30 Rock and at one point one of the DVDs just stopped right at a commercial break part too...weird.

Well, I figured the show's funny enough I'll just go to the store and buy the season one set.
I came home and went to that episode so I could finish it and BAM! It stopped at the same part!
