HALO 3: ODST - your thoughts?

I'm really liking it!

Unfortunately Halo, like all things ultra-popular, has become fashionable to hate on in recent years. But it's hard to deny that it has among the best shooting mechanics in the entire genre, and that the gameplay is rock-solid and consistently entertaining. Bungie really does nail the "30 seconds of fun" notion pretty impressively.

Anyway, some thoughts (after about 2 hours with the campaign last night):

Very moody, very noir. Somebody mentioned that being in the "Hub" as the rookie, with the night skies lit only by the orange glow of the burning remains of the space elevator, feels a lot like the scene in Blade Runner where Harrison Ford is on his balcony looking over the city. That's right on - the light drizzle, the fantastic, slightly jazzy yet mournful score by O'Donnel, everything ... it's just a mood we haven't seen before in Halo and it's really welcome.

That you're no longer a bullet sponge really tightens the combat up. I'm playing on Heroic, which seems just perfect - as it really makes every encounter something you need to take your time with and think about. You can't be a Rambo in this game on any difficulty setting.

I'll have more thoughts as I play through - the campaign is fun so far - I like the new story telling mechanism wherein you find clues as to the wherabouts of your team, and play through flashbacks. Pretty cool.

Well, it plays like a Halo game, which since it is is a good thing, it means it should be a buy for any Halo fans out there.
The small changes in gameplay and the changed mood, music and atmosphere do breath a bit of fresh air in to the franchise though, I think opening up the universe and going for new angles on it is a good way to go.

I'm quite enjoying it so far, and it does feel slightly more challenging than previous Halo games... Not more difficult, like in some games just make things impossible to increase the gameplay time, but more challenging in that you can't just wade in to all situations and exploration is encouraged so you're not just always running along to your next objective.

Overall I'd put it up there with the best of the series, which for me would give it about an 8/10, but this opinion is from a few hours on it, not the complete experience of the game.

I stopped playing Halo 3 online because all of the playlists were becoming DLC required. It's nice to be able to play it again.

The "new" maps look great too.

I only played a tiny portion of the campaign last night, so I'm hardly in a position to give a fair review, but I can honestly say what little I played of it last night didn't really grab me. (Which partially explains why I didn't play very long.)

I can't really put my finger on what I didn't like, I don't think there was anything that I actually disliked, but somehow it just didn't pull me in the way most FPS do. Perhaps the fact that I was playing literally right after finishing Batman colored my judgement somewhat.

I'm a total Halo fanatic but since it's only half a game (I only play single player) I'll just have to rent this one I'm afraid.

How do you mean? The campaign is supposed to be 6 hours long, which is how long it took me to complete Halo 3. It's longer than it took for my friend to complete Modern Warfare.
I think it's short but no shorter than a lot of games lately.

Exactly. Anyone who bitches about a "short" campaign either a) hasn't played the game OR b) been caught up in the fanboy wankathon that's been going on since it was first announced as a download under the title "Halo:Recon".

Personally, I loved the game. The story was great and the characters were the best seen in a Halo Game (Yes, the EU has a lot of development on game characters, but in the confines of the game you learnt more about the main players in ODST than you did in the entirety of Halo 1,2 and 3).

LOVE the suppressed SMG, and the slightly more "espionage-y" gameplay is great too. Completed it earlier on Normal, and will probably have a play through on Legendary starting tomorrow.

Halo 3 took me a lot longer than six hours to finish! I'm a slow cautious player, so to me six hours is like 5 or so levels. Which would be half a game ;)

ODST has taken me about 3 hours so far, and I think I'm about half way through. So maybe ODST will take you longer too. Then again, I only ordered it because it was £10 cheaper than full price.

I want it, but I want Operation Flashpoint 2 more so that is where my money is going to go. I'll pick up ODST when I can get a used copy.

I played it more last night. I'm finding it to be a lot tougher than previous versions of Halo and therefore a bit more frustrating. IDK, still not really feeling it. Kind of wish I would have passed on this one.

And if I'm understanding the comments here correctly, I guess you have to have friends in order to play firefight? Seems like a major screw up to me. If your friends aren't online, or aren't playing Halo when you are, you're just hosed. I'm hoping I'm misunderstanding the comments.

I don't have it yet, but only because I just recently bought another game and I don't want to spend money so fast. I'll ask for it for Christmas.

BTW, Xbox is offering an ODST Premium Theme for free for Gold subscribers. It's only free for a limited time, though, so grab it quickly if you want it.

.

even on easy/casual?

I'm playing it on Normal and I'm wishing I would have started on Easy. I really don't want to start it over, but I may have to. If it gets progressively more difficult as you progress in the game, I can see where I'll not be able to finish it.

Yeah, there's no matchmaking for the co-op modes. You need to spam invites to your friends list, basically.

Well I'm definitely having a case of buyer's remorse. I'm thinking maybe I should Ebay this one sooner rather than later and just take my lumps.
