Halloween 2019 Thread: Pics, Events, etc.

I probably won't even bother next year.

Same. For 5 or 6 kids, it really doesn't feel worth the effort. Though I've been toying with the idea of buying full-sized bars, not because I'm trying to be elitist, but because in the end it would likely end up costing me less with the amount of kids I do get and then I wouldn't have to stare at it in temptation all the time if I buy an expected amount. Those packs of minibars end up adding up and too many of them end up being bought. I'd rather see kids happily getting full-sized bars than minibars at this point.

It has been a steady decline in my neighbourhood too for the last number of years. Each year I would have a bunch left over, so the next year would buy less... and still end up with the same amount left over. Last year for the first time I cut it down to only two boxes... and I still ended up with almost a full box left over.

This year I stuck with two boxes. I briefly considered just getting one, but I didn't want to take the risk. And I'm glad I didn't, because this is the first time in years that the number of kids increased! Certainly not back to the old days when I would go through five or six boxes, but I was in very real danger of running out, which I have never done before. Fortunately, things trickled off significantly around 8:00. Ended up going through almost all of both boxes, with only a few bars left, so probably around 45 - 50 kids more than last year. I actually thought the turnout would be worse than last year, because it was such a cold, rainy and miserable day. But the rain happened to take a break between 6:00 to 9:00, so it seems everyone got out while the getting was good!

Next year to be safe, I'll probably go back up to three boxes. Which means I'll probably end up only going through one again!

We've rarely had any kids visit on my street even though there are residences with children. The one time I recall was 1990 and that was just a young brother and sister with their parents (from another neighborhood) close by in broad daylight. We were not prepared as my uncle and I were caring for my bedridden grandmother in the seriously advanced stages of dementia. (She constantly "howled" like an injured or trapped animal. Her suffering ended just 5 days later.) I felt embarrassed having nothing to offer, until I remembered we had a modest jar of hard peppermint "buttons". The only aspect that kept them from being stereotypical; "grandma candy" was that the mints were individually wrapped, so they were not stuck together into a nasty, single mass. I seized the jar and barreled through the front door screaming, "Wait! Wait!!!" like some sort of lunatic as the family was advancing to my next door neighbor's house. I reached for copious handfuls to place into their bags which I suspect they chucked when they returned home.

Since then, just to avoid a repeat of a random trick'r'treater separated by years, I just made sure no lights could be seen from the light, going so far as to close any doors and might allow light to reach the front windows.

We would not have gotten any visitors Thursday as a cool front rolled into the area, bringing torrential showers. About the only thing missing was the flashing of lightning and the resulting cracks of thunder, making the proverbial "dark and stormy" night. Actually, around here it's kinda' weird to have rain without the "light show". so, in a way, the lack of it made the evening creepier.

It's been that way for about the last 10 years for us. It's been decreasing year after year. I can't even remember the last time we had 100 kids, or even 50. Now we're lucky if we even get 10. We got one knock on the door last night; a round with six kids. That's the extent of it. We had prepared 10 bags of goodies.

I think the most we've ever had are about ten. This year, we had two (unless more come tonight - we've had that before).
It's been a bit chilly, but nothing too over the top.

(If more don't end up coming, you tend to find a lot of treats in the office kitchen next week :) )

I think the most we've had were in the 90's and 2000's. I live in a fairly good neighbourhood that at one time had lots of kids, as there are lots of schools nearby, including a college and a high-school. We used to get fairly big groups of people, but eventually people started trick-or-treating elsewhere, ie in new developments with nicer houses that had been built since then. It kind of sucks to see it change so much, but on the other hand, there's not terribly much one can do.

I always turn off my buzzer to Trick or Treaters, don't answer my door
Most of them round my neck of the woods are only interested in money
Bags of sweets are the least of their worries
I am not a lover of Halloween
In the ultimate irony, myself and my partner went out in Spain dressed as Caprocita Roja and Senor Lobo
Thank fuck it's over for the year

The Avengers party went well. It was very cold sitting outside in the "tent Avengers storage". The kids liked it. Though out of our friends only my husband, two adults (sort of ) and one kid did the theme. So next year is going to be for the adults. Star Trek (any)!
