Halloween 2011: Costume Ideas, Events, etc.

P.S. I wanted to clarify that I wasn't being a smart ass or sarcastic when I posted the question. If I knew what Chris3123's costume was supposed to be, I wouldn't have brought it up in the first place, and that's just me. Since RoJo mentioned the "sonic screwdriver," I'm assuming that Chris is the new Dr. Who character. I thought it would be better to ask than to make a silly assumption, like saying he's one of the Penn & Teller guys.

On a related note, does anyone know of a good site/on-line tool I can use to shrink picture sizes? I know we have a limit of 640 x 480 or 80 KB, but when I do that, the picture quality doesn't look so good, so I just post links to my Photobucket page.

^Photobucket itself can resize your images. Haven't ever used that function though, so I don't know how good the quality is.

My daughter will be Hermione Granger. I made a scarf last night and a tie this morning. I'll try to get a picture up tonight.

Here's what I call stage 1. Really, I'm only making you look at it because it's the only one that shows the whole tie and damn it, it took 5 hours to make.

Stage 2, we add the sweater. You can see scraps of tie and scarf construction all over the background

Stage 3, we add the robe. My mother worked miracles doubling over and temporarily sewing my brother's college graduation gown to make a passable wizard's robe for a 4-year-old.

And finally we add the scarf. The scarf is also my first attempt at using a sewing machine.

The Gryffindor patch is simply printed on photo paper and cut out.

Expelliarmus!

The wand is a stick she picked up in the front yard. I haven't made her wand yet.

So all this work only saved us about 10 bucks over buying the robe-only costume in the store, but I always thought home-made costumes were more special as a kid and I really wanted to make something special and unique for my little girl. She wears it to pre-school today for their costume party. I can't wait.

^^ Wow, she's a real shoe-in for a Hogwarts apprentice. :)

Well, anybody into pumpkin carving? There are some pretty outrageously skilled people in that medium... Go HERE.
A sample:

Went through some trouble myself, couldn't get the colorful scarf for a Fourth Doctor costume, nor could I find welding goggles for Dr. Horrible. Finally just gave up and picked up some suspenders to go as Mal Reynolds. Probably won't get a holster in time, but other than that it looks good.

We probably don't interact on FB enough for it to be in your feed, but if you go to my profile it's the top thing on my wall.

I'll have to check it out when FB is acting normal. It's being a little strange at the moment for some reason.
Also, no. You're not getting my stereo.

those are wonderful! making my kids costumes always ended up costing way more than just buying one but was always more satisfying and fun.
