Gundam Franchise Mega-Thread

The three "films" of the OG Gundam are on Netflix. I know they don't have a great reputation. But I think a lot of the hate is unfounded. Really, most of what is cut isn't that important. Gundam Shows have A LOT of filler. The one exception is maybe 00.

I don't fault you at all, mate. Early ZZ is worse than it's reputation when you watch it yourself. Sad thing is, stopping where you did. The series still hasn't reached rock bottom, if you can believe that.

If you ever decide to complete ZZ, I can give the episode guide you should follow.

Start with episode 25, "Rommel's Face" and continue to episode 37, "Nahel Argama".

This 12 episode stretch of stories is where ZZ starts to turn things around. It's not great or amazing. Every character is still a comic relief character. However, the unfunny comedy and gags are turned way down. Zeon gets "some" it's menace back and people start dying again. Kamille and Fa return briefly and it serves as a psuedo passing of the torch of the Zeta cast to the ZZ cast. Something early ZZ botched entirely.

After episode 37, skip episodes 38-41. ZZ turned things around for 12 episodes, and right before the final arc of the show. Someone decided the show needed to detour back to the early ZZ episodes of unfunny slapstick, gag silliness. Complete with different set of teenagers who want to steal both Zeta Gundams to sell them. All while being on a colony ruled by a Chinese Mafia don called Tiger Baum, who is a cornball himself.

Finish off the series with episodes 42-47. This covers the First Neo Zeon War. Which is more of a Zeon Civil War between Haman and Glemy.

Glemy began the series as an ensign nobody under the command of Mashmyre Cello (Marshmallow). In the second half of ZZ (starting with episode 27 ), Glemy was reframed as a rival and antagonist to Haman. The reason for this was the role was originally supposed to go to Char. The plan was that after Zeta Gundam; Char would rest, return to playing the hero but slowly drift into wanting to wrestle control of Zeon away from Haman and embrace his destiny as Casval Deikum. HOWEVER, ZZ is a toxic wasteland up until episode 25. So the powers that be decided to keep Char away from the series. Bright also leaves the series at episode 37. By that time, Tomino had secured funding and permission to adapt his screenplay Beltochika's Children. Which after edits from the censors, was made into the 1988 movie Char's Counterattack.

Again totally up to you and I totally get it if you want to write ZZ off entirely.

Yeah, maybe someday I'll come back to it, although the fact that I've already seen Char's Counter Attack kind of renders it pointless. ZZ just totally drained my enthyusiasm to watch Gundam with the episodes I saw, so I figured its better to drop it, take a brake and come back to another show when I'm in the mood for some Gundam.

I thought that the OG Gundam movies were fine. I never felt confused or lost watching them, and I'm sure I enjoyed watching them more then I would have enjoyed watching the whole original series. That said, I'd recommend watching Zeta the series over its compilation movies, which don't seem to have as good a reputation.

In the year Universal Century 0079, a state of war began when the Principality of Zeon declared its independence from the Earth Federation government. In the war's opening stages, the Zeon forces maintained an advantage thanks to the effectiveness of their new weapon, the mobile suit. However, they lacked the fighting strength to fully conquer Earth, and the war became a stalemate. Eleven months after the outbreak of war, a base in Zeon-occupied Eastern Europe is captured by the Federation Forces. A Zeon composite battalion is sent to recapture the base, and among its members are Solari and her Red Wolf Squadron, a mobile suit team that has only just arrived from space.

That looks really interesting. It almost seems to be portraying the Gundam as a horror movie creature, some unstoppable force intent on wiping the soldiers out (a feeling helped by the footage keeping the Gundam mostly in shadow, with glowing eyes in the darkness). Who knows if the whole (6 episode) series will keep that tone, but its definitely an intimidating sight.

Apparently its coming out October 17, I'll be looking forward to it.

You know how Zeon generally have Mobile Suits with 1x Eye & Federation has 2x Eyes.

We don't have a faction with 3x Horizontal Eyes in a row.

That would be nice & Alien-ish =

Of course I'll watch the series because it looks really interesting, but I'm a little annoyed by the tendency to make Zion seem like the Federation's equivalent if not the "good guys".

They killed THREE BILLION people in a few days. Their favorite sport was gassing the colonies and using them for target practice against Earth. Their leader openly used Nazi-style rhetoric.

But in the latest series they always appear ethically and morally not dissimilar from their enemies. OK, the Federation didn't want to give Zion independence. But I don't see that as a good justification for their atrocities. At least in the original series they were clearly the "bad guys", albeit with various nuances.

I've been meaning to schedule a rewatch of Gundam Unicorn for that very reason.

I want to say that it was Unicorn that began the Zeon "apologism" trend we've seen recently. I may be wrong though.

Bandai/Sunrise is probably of the same mindset as Disney is with the Empire/First Order from Star Wars. They want to market the biggest/most popular villains of their IP. But have to try to tap dance around the overt Nazi Schutzstaffel aspect of their depiction. "So, of course the Empire/First Order are bad, but did you know the Jedi are also evil"? It's true! From a certain point of view.

Yep!

By the way, I'm the only one who thinks that the "plot twist" in Unicorn is a little idiotic?

Two of the most terrifying pieces of hardware was this suit:

And this mobile armor

While the suits got model kits—the space shuttle like craft got no merchandise IIRC.

I don't remember any shuttles/transports ever being sold as model kits.

Apparently they turned up the "Profanity Filter" for the naming of Characters/Mobil Suits to the extreme, hopefully that gets rectified soon.

You got to love how G Gundam was SOOO different from the other Gundam series.
It's over-powered in the most Shonen Manga of ways =D.

Even that had nothing on Gurren Lagaan.

I wonder how many Gundam fans remember this:

-used to be a Pontiac driven by the Hoff’
