Guinan

I always felt that if they were going to give, Q, Ro, & Wesley closure episodes in season 7, Guinan should've gotten one as well. We all knew she wouldn't play any kind of substantial part in the movies, & it might have given us a chance to know her in some way. We never really knew her. Time's Arrow was the closest we ever got to any kind of tangible backstory on her, short of her talking about bits of her life. I mean every other recurring TNG character, by the end, we knew everything about them, but with her, despite how much she spoke about herself, we honestly have no idea who that character is, a mother, a mystic, a friend, an old soul, an anthropologist. These are just aspects to her. We kind of deserved a bit more about her as just a person we know

Was there even any explanation of why she wasn't around in year 7? That was quite unfortunate

Unfortunately, we did not see HOW Guinan became such close friends with Picard. Whoopie shows up, has these general interactions with the crew and next thing you know, completely out of the blue, she's Picard's Yoda, or some shit and it's completely baseless, insofar as what's been presented onscreen.

You mean between the past as shown in Times Arrow and The Child? I wonder if any novels dealt with the second time they met?

I see Guinan as some kind of "defender" of humanity on 7 year trial of mankind. She is around when big questions are asked, in 'Yesterday's Enterprise', what to do, and in 'I Borg', first being very hostile towards the Borg but giving Picard some advice towards the end of that dilemma.

Guinan seems to know Q, looking at how she reacted to him in 'Q Who'. Perhaps Guinan knew of this trial thing and got herself to the Enterprise for that reason. She doesn't seem to be an everyday alien...

Yes, there's this sudden, inexplicable jump from casual acquaintanceship to profound friendship which appears to be there solely to make Whoopie's role seem more significant, seeing how she was a major film star. As though it were an afterthought, or in response to a complaint she had. Look ... if Guinan was Picards bestest friend in the whole wide universe (and she was), I'm FINE with that and why wouldn't I be? It just would've been nice to see how that came about, over the course of the series, rather than the writers up and arbitrarily deciding it was so, one day.

I don't have time to find it right now, but I'm certain I've heard an interview with Marina Sirtis (maybe it was with the Mission Log podcast?) where she talked about how the first draft of scripts she would receive would sometimes have dialogue labeled "TROI or GUINAN", depending on whether Whoopi was available. She said in season 1 she would have felt deeply threatened by this, but by season 2 she was secure enough in the job that she was happy for a day off if Whoopi could do it.

Maybe in real life, but for the purposes of a tv show, it limits the heck out of potential usage for Troi's character. For example, Beverly's career risking crisis in Suspicions. If ever she needed help, it's now, to the point where Guinan is literally faking an illness in order to warm into a conversation. Not only should the professional counselor be all over that, but Troi is like her best friend on board too. They confide in each other all the time, & where is she? Absent, all but for one line that hand waves away that fact. I'm sorry, but this ain't the time for the bartender.

I think you can tell it was just Whoopi getting too busy to do the show, I'm sure they would have loved to have her in the last season if they could have. You can see it in the way they structure her last two appearances, "Rascals" and "Suspicions" -- you don't tell those stories that way unless you have Whoopi Goldberg for one day only, and you're trying to maximize the impact you can get from her character.

I don't want to begrudge any of the faulty story logic that gets her into "Suspicions", because I've always been convinced that what happened there is that she became available last minute and they hastily jury-rigged a way to use her. I can remember during original air being so excited when she popped up in the "Suspicions" promo, it had been such a long gap since her previous appearance. Plus, her outfit in that one is even more fabulous than usual.

I do think "Generations" caps the Guinan story fairly well, if she didn't have good material in that I would be so annoyed that "Suspicions" was the end of her arc (was there any character she had less of an established connection with than Beverly?)

Guinean played a perfect 'watcher' type character. They carefully used her character but didn't overuse her. However, I would have liked the writers to explore more of her species and their capabilities. I sometimes wondered if they're immortal but able to die if injured.

Now, that's raw ...

Whoopi was inspired casting. She's perfect for the role; look and listen to her body language and demeanor. She's already an award winning actress, but what she brought to the role only expands her range in acting - and elevated Guinan as a result. A known actor or an unknown can both bring something compelling to a character, but could I imagine anyone else as Guinan? Not really. Whoopi definitely made Guinan her own in the same way Christopher Reeve made Superman his, Lynda Carter for Wonder Woman, Tobey maguire as Spider-Man, and so on. They're definitive. And not all were big stars at the time, so it is more about the talent of the actors and what they see in the character to draw out. IMHO of course. Can a movie have too much star power? Look at the Star Wars prequels. Lots of big names for sure but, for the attempts to expand the lore, the movies largely fall flat. So there's far more to media than just an actor's name or the idea that only big actors can instantly make any character great, like the writing and direction for the actors to take their ideas forward with (or be hindered by). But I digress.

Topped with some top-notch writing on top of Whoopi seeing much in the character (and she did want to be in the show, for which a lot of us are highly appreciative of), Guinan quickly became a memorable character, even eclipsing Troi in a role that doubles as a counselor-type figure. Along with Data, she's one of the most interesting Enterprise-D crew. And gets some of the coolest scenes and episodes. We get to see hints of a backstory with Q, with Picard (especially in TBOBW, how he's more than mere family - which is very open-ended, allowing the audience to think of many possibilities)... She's definitely got a 6th sense with dimensions and causality - right down to Yar and Sela (a terrific sci-fi creation that gets underused and misused and not living up to the potential thanks to poor writing, Denise Crosby did wonders with what she'd been given.)

That and, prune juice. :D Loved how she got Worf to try it. No questions, just get him to open his mind.

She'd also dealt with the Borg (though 'I Borg' shows her character being altered to fit the story narrative, which doesn't fit compared to what has been seen prior to. It's possible she'd change her mind but her epiphany seems too quick. I should re-watch the story, I might not have picked up on something.

Her outfits were as much "accessible" as they were "alien" and Whoopi carries them off with aplomb. I love the style, especially the hat. The Enterprise was the allegory of a melting pot, so there had to be differences as opposed to a universal uniform standard, and Guinan herself adores half-bucking the system, especially with her reaction to Ro's introduction (one of my all-time favorite scenes ever in TNG), so either way the outfit is germane. (DS9 would also get to do a lot more with this, on both counts.)

Around season 6, I was asking where Guinan was since she'd largely disappeared from the show and so much about her, Q, Picard, and other issues were left unanswered. :(

I wish she got better material in "Generations", since the explanation for her species is poorly handled, little more than empty fanservice, and poorly handled empty fanservice.

And her cameo in "Nemesis" was pretty much throwaway as well. :(

Not only was Guinan poorly handled, if the Borg destroyed the El Aurian civilization, how long were they traveling toward (Federation space circa the 23rd century, 78 years earlier and all.) Were the Borg already checking out the Federation? Or were they refugees for decades?
