And there was nothing at all gross about Winn and Dukat. Disturbing, yes, in a psychological "they are both so using each other" way, but not gross. I think both actors are quite attractive for their respective ages (and I've had a crush on Louise Fletcher forever).
He was certainly using her from the start, but there's no reason to think that she was using him to start with or that she was in any way insincere at the beginning of their relationship. She always wanted the Prophet to pay attention to her, and now suddenly they seemed to send her a vision and a guide, this great guy who was telling her all she wanted to hear - must have seemed like a dream come true. Until she found out the truth. Of course she wasn't going to feel the same way when she found out who he really was, and that she had been lied to, deceived and manipulated. So I can't really blame her for deciding to use him and make him a 'sacrifice' in the Fire Caves.
Louise Fletcher didn't look bad for a 60-something, especially with her hair down. As for Alaimo, I wonder if I am the only one who still found him hot in the fake-Bajoran version - so many people always whine about how disappointed they were to see him without Cardie makeup... well, sure, nothing beats his Cardassian look, but I certainly wouldn't kick him out of bed as fake-Bajoran, either! But you know, I don't think people saying it's "gross" has anything to do with the attractiveness of the actors involved... Some people just can't deal with the idea of people over a certain age - especially WOMEN over certain age - having sex or being interested in sex. They think that a woman has to turn into an asexual being as soon as she turns 60, or maybe even 50. You'll especially find that attitude common among men. They probably think they'll watching their mom or something. I'm 34, by the way, but I've always found that attitude very childish, prudish, and generally silly. I've never thought of older people having sex "gross", not even as a teenager - I just thought, hey, good for them! I want to be like that when I grow old.
An example of the attitude described above: David Eick of BSG. A couple of years ago, in answer to fan questions about Adama and Roslin and whether we'd actually see them getting it on onscreen, he said that "It would be like watching your parents have sex". Now, EJO is a 60-year old man that people might or might not find attractive - but from what I have seen on BSG SciFi forums, quite a few female BSG fans did find him attractive... and Mary McDonnell is a woman in her 50s who is slim and very attractive even by conventional Hollywood standards (and looks about a decade younger, IMO). And she's not old enough to be Eick's mom, unless she was a teenage mom. I wonder if Eick had the same problem in season 4, with the pairings of
Caprica Six and Tigh, and Boomer and Cavil
- young and attractive women being paired up with men who were at least 30 years older and decidedly less attractive.
(Ron Moore must have had a good laugh at Eick's expense when in BSG
Roslin and Adama finally did it - but to make it better, Roslin was bald (McDonnell's beautiful long hair was hidden by a cap and makeup) because of hemotherapy, as she was in the late stage of cancer!
As far as what was gross, I can definitely go with any episode that involved eating grubs.
You could be onto something about the age thing. Pretty much all my life I've been more attracted to people older than me, male and female, than I ever was people my own age, but I'm well aware I'm in the minority on that one, particularly when it comes to older women.
As for Alaimo, I also agree with you. I thought he was very attractive as a Bajoran. More attractive as a Cardassian, but in general I think Cardassians are more attractive than humans and Bajorans, not just Marc Alaimo's Dukat.
There was at least one Ferengi episode where some of them were eating grubs. Oddly, the Dax symbiont doesn't bother me as much.
There are places on Earth where people apparently eat worms. I remember watching a documentary on TV years ago where the reporter went someplace in Africa (can't remember where exactly) and ate big roasted worms with members of a tribe who apparently consider it a specialty.
I know Koreans sometimes don't properly prepare shrimp, not only in the sense that they merely neglect to devein (although the flavor of intestinal tract does food no favors). At least in this particularly awful seafood/tofu soup I ordered once, they did not remove the exoskeleton whatsoever.
I ate it, but only because I was being punished. I think I'd have vastly preferred a worm. At least I wouldn't have been able to feel the chitin scratch the sides of my throat on the way down.
I guess it's been too long since this board got some serious Jadzia bashing. I suppose we were due for some more. My only reaction to this unprovoked slander of the most lovely and charming babe on DS9 is:
I think the grossest thing I ever saw on DS9 was the hologram with the girl body and the Quark head. People say "Meridian" isn't a completely horrible episode just because that subplot is so funny, but that ending is so awful, even Jeffrey Combs' as always delightful acting can't save it and it just makes me hate the episode more. And thank you so much to whoever brought that up...I was happy to have forgotten about it!
Some of the alien make-up was really yuck as well. As mentioned earlier, I agree that the Bajoran noses were unsightly and I also hated the make-up on the alien woman that participates in Quark's auction in "Q-Less". Vash's aging make-up in that episode was pukeriffic too.
The alien originally possessing the device from Rivals was exceedingly ugly, one of the reasons I don't like that episode as much as some others.
Other than that, the dead proto-changeling/lifeform from The Alternate, was also one of the more disgusting images of the season, actually dead changelings on the whole are a bit nasty to look at.
