Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 3

Gunn doesn't make that call.
Maybe not directly, but we do know many of the cast feel an intense amount of loyalty to Gunn, just look at the way many of them reacted a few years ago when Disney fired him. I can easily see them willing to respect his wishes and view this movie as the end for the Guardians and could very well refuse to do any further movies without Gunn.

I finally saw this on DisneyPlus. I thought it had a better narrative than "Guardians of the Galaxy 2". Parts of it reminds me of "The Rescuers Down Under". But the movie felt rather heavy-handed in a way that seems as if Gunn doesn't know how to balance pathos and humor. Instead, his story seemed to bounce back and forth from one extreme to another. I also found most of the performances rather mixed. When it comes to writing, Gunn needs another Nicole Perlman. A co-writer who is stronger at creating narratives than he is.

The Holiday Special was so fucking awful it's killed my enthusiasm for this.
Maybe you're just more of a DC fan, where they try to shoehorn most of their characters into being dull, overly serious, and grimdark clones of Batman no matter what. Interestingly enough, also completely screwing up Batman himself left and right along the way. ("OMG, did you see him gun down everyone with those machineguns? So kewwwwwwlll! And watch him slowly stomp along and box everyone along the way, that's the World's Greatest Detective who was trained by master king fu assassins if ever there was one! Oh wait, crud, he said something that was probably supposed to be funny but fell flat, I hate this now! Superheroes have to be dark and grimy and boring!!!")

Okay, I may be a bit biased and disgruntled there, lol.

Anyway, my point is basically just that God forbid there be some fun movies or shows out there. Or even realize that some of them have been humorous practically since day one. To this day I can't even comprehend how people raged about She-Hulk breaking the fourth wall or being a comedy. Just... like.... what?

What the fuck is this rant?

No, the GotG Holiday Special was hot garbage, IMHO. I like all 3 of the GotG movies very much, though.

I thought the GotG holiday special was simply plain garbage. So did the rest of my family. And I don't have a problem with lighthearted comic book movies as long as I like the story. The same can be said for the darker/angst ones.

What were you guys expecting from a show named in honor of the Star Wars Holiday Special?

A variety show based on Planet X, where Groot's family was waiting for him to come home to celebrate Abscission Day when they wilt their leaves in preparation for a cold winter? Maybe with his grandfather, Groot, going to sit down in his Lay-Z-Boy to watch some tree porn, while his wife, Groot, is wearing a cute little apron and busy preparing a feast with the help of a cooking tutorial by a coniferous Julie Childs played by Meryl Streep? Ooh, and maybe an animated flashback short of Drax riding on the back of Lockjaw just before he loses his family for some absolutely random reason unrelated to the metaplot of the special?

Something like that, I guess? As opposed to the fairly warm, light-hearted story that we got alongside some some comedy and major lore bomb drops.

I've just watched Volume 3 on Disney+. I thought it was probably the best of the three GotG movies and the best Marvel movie of the last five years. My criterion is that I wanted to watch it again straight away - heart-wrenching as much of Rocket's story is. I didn't have that urge with Captain Marvel, for example, or even Endgame. I haven't yet watched the holiday special - it seems like one has to be in the right mood given the reactions above.

It's a pity that Rocket's story arc didn't exactly save the movie for me. Like I had said, I thought the movie was better than "Guardians 2". But overall, I found it problematic.
