It's a breathing apparatus that probably comes wth enhanced vision modes. Not really intended as a helmet.

I still don't understand the point of Star-Lord's helmet if it doesn't cover the top of his head.

Why should it? It's not armor. As others pointed out, it's mostly just an air mask with a few other technowizardry perks. You might as well complain about the point of wearing a helmet at all when the only other armor you're wearing is a leather jacket.

It's not the armor part, it's more about how he uses it in space, like it's supposed to protect him (or Gamora, in that one scene) from vacuum.

They seem to have body modifications that protect them from vacuum. The helmet is more for providing air/heat.

I always love that people will accept every weird, unreal, unbelievable thing from a comic book movie, but something like the armour thing is a huge debate topic.

It's a movie about a half human/half planet hybrid, a raccoon, a talking tree, a green woman and a huge purple man. They fight a big blue dude at some point, with a gem that can destroy planets. Huge, empty heads of big aliens are used as colonies. But sure, let's argue about a helmet.......
