Grade the movie...

Saw it for $4.50 with luxury seating (like a big recliner with four feet of legroom)! Didn't realize the matinee showings were as cheap as that. However, this thread has me wanting to see it again in 3D.

Random musings:

- I didn't think Lee Pace had enough presence to pull off his villain role. When you have a two-dimensional character like that you need someone who can make it pop.

- On the flip side, loved Michael Rooker chewing the scenery. And really, if you're going to hire Rooker you want him to chew the scenery.

- Interesting how much music played a part in this though we could see that coming from the trailers. I think most of the time it added to the scenes but I thought Cherry Bomb (a song I like) just didn't work very well. The music works nicely to ground the movie without having to actually involve the Earth.

- Is this the first movie with both a Stan Lee and Lloyd Kaufman cameo? I liked seeing the Kirbyesque Celestial. Too bad Bereet didn't have that big mohawk wing helmet or whatever it is.

- Anyone see in the credits: No raccoons or tree creatures were harmed making this movie.

- Knowhere seemed like something you might see in nuWho.

Chris Pratt was fun in the lead, Bradley Cooper stole the show as the voice of Rocket, and David Batista was surprisingly good. Zoe Saldana's heart didn't seem to be in it, though, which was odd, since she's made a lot of silly things work by committing to them in the past.

Maybe as a movie of fun characters she didn't get much to do in that department. Same with Karen Gillan's Nebula who didn't do much more than look cool.

Vin Diesel you're sly for getting paid all that for only what amounted to three lines - okay so one was repeated multiple times. :D

That sure gets brought up a lot. I think deep down we're all very jealous.

If I'm not mistaken Diesel also did some Mo-Cap work so, to be fair, he involvement in the movie wasn't *just* him saying the same three words over and over again with different inflections. (Not to mention doing the lines in other languages.)

The fact that they made Rocket such an character you can attach to is a testament to how well this movie worked, I actually felt for him when Groot sacrificed himself.

Drax was good too though I wish they played up his literalism more.

Then stop bitching about the lack of a 2D option in every movie thread. Reviews on "2D glasses," which cost a few bucks on Amazon, are very positive for people who have issues with 3D movies. Or complain to the manager of your local theater. But in every thread EVERY THREAD you bitch about the lack of a 2D option.
You know what? To hell with you and not knowing shit of what you're talking about. To hell with your attitude.

Everybody take a moment to breathe. It's getting needlessly personal. I can understand both your points of view about the lack of a 2D option so often (mostly for reasons of cost), but i think we're all aware of that now.

I loved the movie!

I went in with pretty high expectations and they were exceeded.

I was blown away by how full out sci-fi this movie was. Marvel did not attempt to make a real or grounded movie. They went full on Star Wars. The entire movie is nothing alien planets, crazy alien makeup, space fleets, and talking trees and animals. Absolutely awesome.

More to the point, we saw a full realized world out there in the Marvel U. We saw the Nova Corps. The Kree Empire. THE @&@#&$ING CELESTIALS. They went all out!

And the sense of humor was great. I loved Rocket and Groot.

I even thought the villains were much more interesting than the ones in Thor 2. Ronan the Accuser and Nebula and Yondu all looked absolutely amazing. And we got full on THANOS!

If I had one major complaint... apparently no-one in the Nova Corps has any super powers?! How are they going to do the inevitable Nova movie? Is Richard Rider the first Nova to ever get powers by accident?

I doubt they could resist doing an origin story.

Also, why weren't Ronan's underlings Kree?

And *in the comics* has Groot ever said "we"? that bugged me.

But these are minor quibbles.

How about this for a Marvel No-Prize? He actually said "I am Groot" but at that moment they all understood what he meant as Rocket did throughout.

Did the Aether survive the explosion in the Collector's collection?

I'm sure it "survived" it's just a matter if it is still contained, same with everything else in the collection. I wonder if the explosion in The Collector's room is what leads to the Aether falling into the hands of Thanos.

Which, while Thanos is in the Phase 3 Avengers movie, still seems we've still got three more Infinity Gems to discover and Thanos still needs to get his hands on, well, all of them. And I must have missed it, what was the Infinity Gem in this movie called?

This was the power gem, but I do think the mind gem is in Loki's scepter.

Yeah, but what was it's name? We have the Tesseract, the Aether and from what I've just found on-line this one is called "The Orb" (based on the housing its kept in) which strikes me as a mundane name considering the others' names.

And *in the comics* has Groot ever said "we"? that bugged me.

Scanning Wikipedia right now it seems that Groot is actually talking but his species' vocal cords are so stiff and their language thus so complex that everything he says sounds like "I am Groot." So, from that, I take it that he's actually talking and trying to say thing it's just that no one can really understand it. So, I'm guessing he's only ever said "I am Groot" in the comics.

I guess "I am Groot" is the "Soda water rhubarb" of his species. ;)

But, it seems that this movie has a different take in that that is what he is literally saying and just either doesn't have the intelligence, vocal capabilty, or grasp of Common enough to say anything more than "I am Groot" and that "We are Groot" was something of a step forward for him. ;)

I absolutely loved this movie! Watching a main character begin his journey by dancing and singing his way on screen let me know I was about to go on a very fun ride. I loved the characters (and I went in as a non comic person, so getting attached to these characters quickly was really unexpected), the humour, the action, everything!

I will see this a second time (something I rarely do anymore) and I can't wait to spend more time with these characters again in the next movie.

Awesome movie, great fun, and I want to see more...A+

I just re-read the "Annihilation" series and there was a lot of it in the movie, particularly the Prologue issue; the Kyln prison. Xandar Prime being attacked. Drax starting the story in a Nova Corps jail. Peter Quill being kooky and annoying. Gamora having a romantic fling with the main character (Nova, in this case).

If I had one major complaint... apparently no-one in the Nova Corps has any super powers?! How are they going to do the inevitable Nova movie? Is Richard Rider the first Nova to ever get powers by accident?

I doubt they could resist doing an origin story.

Gunn is not a fan of the character.

Kevin Feige has that Nova was considered for inclusion at one point. What happened there?
I think certain people really like Nova. Quite honestly, I really don't care. He's not a favourite character. I don't know whether he's ever going to show up.

Why the strong focus on the Nova Corps then?
I think they serve a purpose? I like the Nova Corps, I just don't like Nova that much! He's okay, you know? I just don't like that helmet!
