I saw the movie yesterday, and I loved it. It was just a lot of goofy fun. And like I suspected, Rocket was my favorite character.
I thought it had a really good story, some cool action scenes, interesting characters, lots of humor, and cool art design.
I voted A+.

Actually Rocket is the one character that didn't really work as well for me. Bradley Cooper did a good job voicing him, but I just found his personality more grating and annoying than ever actually funny.

The only moment of his I loved was after the orb destroys the Collector's place, and he freaks out that they're still carrying the thing. :)

You didn't like him getting Starlord to steal that man's leg? That was hilarious.

Then stop bitching about the lack of a 2D option in every movie thread. Reviews on "2D glasses," which cost a few bucks on Amazon, are very positive for people who have issues with 3D movies. Or complain to the manager of your local theater. But in every thread EVERY THREAD you bitch about the lack of a 2D option.
You know what? To hell with you and not knowing shit of what you're talking about. To hell with your attitude.

Keep in mind that Rocket wasn't a comic relief character, so his personality wasn't necessarily supposed to be found funny. Every character had humor associated with them (except perhaps Gamora), but the idea of Rocket being funny because he's a raccoon never came from rocket himself, only from others reacting to him (and, even then, it was often tragic because those laughs at his expense were hurtful to him). More often than not, Rocket's humor came from him being a tough guy who likes guns (the "that's a fake laugh" scene comes to mind, although that scene really worked for the banter between all of them, including Gamora).

I saw this movie today. While I admit I knew next to nothing about these Marvel characters, I enjoyed it immensely. This is aptly dubbed "the class clown of the Marvel Cinematic Universe." It's fun and funny to watch, filled with witty humor. What sets it apart from other superhero films is that it has a very human character at its center, and it doesn't take itself way too seriously.

The Nova Force is done differently, which portrays Xandar as a world filled with ordinary humanoids.

Everyone in the theater who stayed past the credits got a kick out of the brief scene with the Collector and Howard the Duck.

Nova Prime tells Peter Quill that his father was/is not human. Does it say in the comics what Quill's part ancestry is?

I give this movie an A+.

I did manage to see the movie this afternoon.

Quite enjoyed and would probably would rate it around a Flat-B.

This was one of the Marvel movies I was most worried about since we're dealing with pretty much D-List characters here so it was certainly a big risk to give them a movie in an established cinematic universe that has accomplished so much in the last 6 years or so. And, know what? Marvel knocked it out of the park again.

The story is pretty stock and pedestrian as these types of movies go and, on a basic level, the same could be said for the characters and the situation they're presented with but the ingredients and chemistry concocted here just manages to really gel together and work.

It's easy to criticize the movie in not taking a big enough risk as far as the story goes (there's an evil MacGuffin that an evil person wants to destroy a planet, yadda, yadda) but it seems odd to say that a movie isn't taking risks when we're in a relatively "realistic" movie universe and we're dealing with an anthropomorphic tree and a bipedal talking raccoon. I think the movie had enough of it's chips on long shots to risk putting more chips on other things.

Pratt does a good job as a our entourage's somewhat-leader as a human who was kidnapped as a child after watching his mother succumb to cancer, Zoe Saldna is good as a stoic master-assassin whose in good as a "daughter" to the main villain but his plans to see his destruction, then we have a WWE wrestler playing the overly-literal muscle-bound Drax wanting to avenge the death of his family and we have our two big-risk CGI characters. There's the anthropomorphic tree Groot that only knows three (well, four) words and one of them is his own name (voiced by vastly over-cast Vin Diesel) but seems able to convey his ideas and thoughts (to Rocket, at least) just by his inflection of them and then there is Rocket, a genetically enhanced raccoon with a lot of attitude.

Under various circumstances this group find themselves in possession of another one of the "Infinity Stones" that's sought out by the movie's heavy, Ronan, for use to destroy a planet that has an millennia old beef with his people.

There's the usual formula in movies like this where we have a group of characters who're at odds with one another due to having conflicting personalities and goals and must learn to work together in order to do something greater than all of them.

But, again, the movie's biggest risk is these characters themselves and perhaps even the movie's setting and overall tone. (A series of pop songs from the 1970s and 1980s makes up the bulk of the great soundtrack of the movie.)

But, in the end, it's all pretty fun and enjoyable and a very worthy addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And while the Guardians may not currently have any connection to what's going on on Earth, and in Asgard, with the Avengers obvious with another Infinity Gem/Stone introduced what happens in the movie will play a larger part in Phase 3 of the MCU. I look forward to GotG 2 and if/when they're introduced to The Avengers.

Good fun.

FWIW, I saw the movie in IMAX 3D and thought it looked good. Not exactly sure the 3D really added much but maybe at this point I'm just growing too used to it to the point where I don't really notice or care about it. It was good 3D but I'm not sure it's really worth it. The IMAX version certainly looked crisp and good but, again, IMAX.

Go see it, probably one of the better movies of a very underwhelming summer.

In at least one version (I think relatively early on), his father is J'Son, Emperor of the Spartoi Empire.

Saw it and gave it a 'B'.

Thought it was a solid film but it still felt 'lacking'. There were times where I would begin to get involved and the humor would take me back out of it.

Fun movie, great soundtrack.

I was just reading up on Star Lord the yesterday, and that does appear to still be true. I think J'Son has even made some fairly recent appearances.
I forgot to mention in my other post, how much I got a kick out of the end credits scene. I didn't read any spoilers so the appearance of Howard The Duck was completely unexpected.
If anyone else was wondering, according to this article he was voiced by Seth Green.

J'Son is all over the current GotG comic run, and he's involved in most of the cosmic stuff. If you see a gathering of Space Empire Leaders, he's there, at least since the current GotG run started. He was one of the leaders that was seen a decent amount in the Infinity event. He even pops up in books without the Guardians, like Captain Marvel. I'm not a huge fan of him as a character, he's a bit too one dimensional, but he works well enough for his role in Starlord's life.

I'm pissed. I WANT to see this movie, but I DON'T want to pay extra to see it in 3D (because it bothers my eyes) and there's no 2D screening locally.

I hate this 3D shit. The film doesn't even look good. It looks too dark and the colours are washed out. Give me a nice clear 2D anytime. I haven't yet been able to see the latest Apes movie either because of this.
The film is quite colorful. Nothing was washed out from what I remember. Even the prison scenes had warm tones and lighting to accentuate the gritty metal look.

The CGI for Rocket Raccoon was beyond incredible, maybe the best I've seen yet. It still "looked" CGI, but it was so well done that I forgot about it.
He was totally believable to me. CGI has come a long way since Star Wars Episode I.

Well that was just ridiculously entertaining and funny. Felt a lot like Star Wars (OT) and Farscape and Serenity.

Just another point I wanted to make was how gladly surprised I was with how good the 3D looked. Most impressive.

Also, of all the tracks on Awesome Mix Vol.1 I'd go for this as my favourite. That part was awesome.

I loved that bit! Especially because at the time it seems like it will be part of the plan.

Yeah, I liked the 3D in this and how colourful it was.

Did anyone actually get emotional when Groot sacrificed himself? I wanted to, but it was pretty obvious that he would come back.

Actually I thought the most emotional bit was when Rocket got drunk and decided to shoot up the casino. I can't imagine it's easy to portray a character who in the natural way of things is the group wisecracker and then make him seriously messed up. He did get most of the best lines, though. As Bob says, a strong Farscape feel to it. The roles were nicely mixed up with the toughest guy being the smallest and the big guy being a twit.

Yeah, drunk Rocket was a great moment. I think one of the best parts is how we were complicit too. It really dramatized the idea of laughing that he's a talking Raccoon and (for lack of a better word) humanized the character.

Seemed like a perfect film, but I wasn't happy with yet another, giant ship hovers over then eventually falls onto city finale, that's getting tiresome.

Officially adding this to my list of "BBSer complaints that I will never understand."

What did you want the thing to do? Aircraft and Spacecraft fall when you break them past the point of normal operation. If there's an aircraft or spacecraft in your movie, you have to add this risk for realism's sake. Ship breaks inside a gravity well, gravity wins.

Did you want it to fall up???

I couldn't have explained it better if I tried :bolian:

I do really like him as a character though and look forward to him popping up in future Guardians films and maybe even just the MCU in general.
