I'm not sure if the techniques used in GotG are "better". Th ending battle .. where all these ships appeared from pretty much out of knowhere (ha ha joke) to fight in this battle just to create as many laser beams as possible just didn't have the simple, streamlined power of the trench run. Even my mother, who is not a sci fi fan, was amazed by how they showed speed during the trench run, and she always knew what was going on.

People had heard of Bruce willis though, GOTG had no huge names among main characters. The trailers for GOTG had alot of music and energy in them and really if people didn't like the movie even with the Marvel tag on it the movie wouldn't have made so much money.
Zoe Saldana? Bradley Cooper? Vin Diesel?

Zoe Saldana is hardly a big enough of a name to be a meaningful box-office draw all on her own. And while Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel could be box-office draws on their names alone it hardly counts when they're only providing voices (and mo-cap) and their voices are distorted in post or they're "doing voices" to the point you cannot even tell it's them. (Neither of them sound like themselves) and, as pointed out, Vin Diesel only really has one line (two if you want to count the "We're" over "I'm.") Granted he puts a lot into his one or two lines and makes each one mean something different but it's still one line with him doing a voice. Pretty much anyone could have done it. Same with Bradley Cooper, a lot of good performances in his line reading but that's it and, again, he's "doing a voice" so you can't even tell it's him.

Sometimes with animated movies a big-name can be a draw when they're providing a voice but usually in those cases the person doesn't "do a voice" and sound like themselves.

That leaves us with Pratt and Saldana as our leads to attract audiences and neither of them quite have the appeal to do it all on their own, though Pratt probably does now given his performance and physique in the movie. At the very least his star is rising. Not sure Saldana has much going for her, really, and this is also a case where makeup sort of conceals her.

As said, no one was going to this movie to hear Vin Diesel grunt "I am Groot" or to hear Bradley Cooper rant like a psychotic raccoon. No one was going to this movie to see Zoe Saldana in green make-up (or Kare Gillian bald and in blue make-up, for that matter if we want to get wider in box-office draws) or to see Chris Pratt strut around to 70s music.

The entire cast is replaceable as far as talent goes. They all did great jobs but it's hard to say they all owned the roles or were a draw. Unlike, say, Robert Downey, Jr. -with all of his faults at the time- being a huge draw for Iron Man. At the time he was till more-or-less an A-list actor, or at least high on the B-List with an asterisk after his name saying that he can't easily be insured and to keep your eye open for mirrors and credit-cards with scuffed-up edges.

This movie was a risk for Marvel. Anecdotal, but for most of the past Marvel movies most everyone I knew was going to it opening weekend for Guardians? No one was sure because the trailers just didn't sell them and the movie looked ridiculous with the tree/raccoon characters (as well as the soundtrack for the trailer. I liked it but I admit it gave the movie an unusual-looking tone.) But after seeing it and telling people about it, I got many to go see it and everyone liked it the.

Marvel was certainly confident people would like the movie and word-of-mouth would get people in theaters post pre-screenings and the first weekend but people were unsure of this movie before it was released and before word-of-mouth spread.

GOTG was a case of someone having an idea on how this could work and selling the idea convincingly to those who would bankroll it. And the ultimate beauty was that it did work as hoped. It survived the translation from concept to end product.

None of the actors' names put forth meant anything to me...save Vin Diesel who I enjoyed in The Iron Giant as well as the Riddick films (mostly 1 and 3).

The trailer intrigued me with its suggested concept and sense of humour. It struck me us somewhat unusual and absurd yet in a good way.

Marvel has done all right, but their name isn't enough to draw me. I didn't care about X-Men or enough about Thor to go see them in theatre. Captain America (both) and The Avengers were the only ones I saw in theatre until GOTG came along. So being a Marvel film wasn't a selling point. To that end I've little interest in seeing Ant Man. Doctor Strange and Black Panther are "we'll see" when we start seeing trailers.

So it comes down to the idea of GOTG intrigued me and the trailers interested me to go see it. And I hardly think I was the only one.

my opinion is not trolling. if it didnt have marvel stamped on it people wouldnt be trying to defend this mess

again my opinion
Not defending it "because it's a Marvel film." I was always a DC guy anyway, too much Spidey-angst and "HULK SMASH!" for me. But the films are, you'll admit, well made. Keep in mind there was an earlier Hulk film which didn't do so well.

I've never seen a single GotG comic. Not ever. So the film stands or falls on what I see, like any other film.

he only says one line the entire movie!

Two lines, technically.

GOTG also reminded me of Star Wars only I think it's a helluva lot more enjoyable than SW with much better writing, acting and execution all around.

The original Star Wars? Now you've lost me.

Yeah, I wouldn't go that far. Besides outer space I see no resemblance to Star Wars. Unless a large fan base sprouts up dressing like starlord and buying GOTG merchandise I don't think there is any comparison.

As noted by others the better, if not best, parallel for this film as it stands is with the Sci-Fi channel show Farscape. It's not Star Wars, the film isn't but I couldn't argue against the comic roots being a blend. In the comics Star Lord/Quill(Luke) and his GotG(Falcon/Rebels) are often at odds with his dad, J'Sonn(Vader) of the Spartax Empire which is not exactly benevolent.

I don't think Set was trying for a character to character, story to story parallel. And really GOTG has some of the flavor of Farscape, but then Farscape wasn't very original in that premise.

Still I rewatched GOTG yesterday and it's an awesome movie. The battle for Xandar was multi-tiered and exciting and quite epic.

I'm just thinking out loud here, but a Farscape movie would rock. Hard.

(Aside: Before the wife and I got married she called me one night and asked what I was doing. I said I was watching Farscape. "Fire Escape?" she asked, oblivious. I laughed and laughed. I love that woman.)

I had a coworker ask me if I had seen Farscape before. With his thick Texas drawl, I could hear nothing but 'Fire Escape'. I kept asking him... "Fire Escape, what's that?" It took way longer than it should have considering Farscape is a top 5 show for me.

We didn't get married.

And then of course some married guys are gonna end up looking at the fire escape if you know what I mean...

Amy Pond. They covered her up, but she's in there somewhere.

(Karen is an unfortunate girl who is 90 percent legs, that medical science has not been able to remedy.)

I put the BluRay in last night so the wife and I could watch it together. It was her first viewing since the theater. She laughed all the way through it, and that's saying something. She's not into scifi at all.

Toward the end, the 26 yr old daughter came in and sat down with us. She's the one who rolls her eyes at all of my fandom stuff (even when I set up a meeting for her with some genre style producers in LA). But when that tear rolled down Rocket's face, she was all "Awww ...".

Too bad she missed all the cool Groot scenes, but she loved Dancing Baby Groot.

Yeah, and Drax turns around only once in that scene. ;)

I just love the music cues and use in this movie, Quills opening titles strutting, the song playing when Quill escapes the prison to re-board his ship, great, great use of old music in this movie. I bought the soundtrack on CD. (Would have loved to get the the cassette but I have no tape player.)

This is pretty much the soundtrack of my teen years. Maybe that's why I like it so much.

I still have a cassette boombox. It wouldn't be a problem to make a cassette of these tunes. In fact, my old truck has a cassette player. All I'd need is a Star Lord mask. Hmmm ...

Well, why not get the Guardians of the Galaxy "Awesome Mix Vol. 1" soundtrack on vinyl? :)

I just saw it for the second time ever on blu-ray. Loved it all over again! I'm still shocked and how science fiction-y they went with this one. No more attempts at realism. Nova Corps! The Kree! the head of a Celestial! Thanos! Love it!
