Green Lantern officially has a green light

In DC and Marvel comic books, superheroes have journeyed to other planets more times than we can count. Green Lantern will be the first DC or Marvel superhero to do so in a live-action movie. To me this will be a landmark event in the film genre.

Didn't Superman return from a trip to Krypton's former location in Superman Returns?

Yes, but more or less offstage. The movie begins with his return to Earth, and he remains on Earth for the rest of the film. There's no actual extraterrestrial exploits.

That's right. But it's still too bad that Bryan Singer didn't use that scene in the movie.

As neat as it might have been, it wouldn't have added anything to the story and themes of Superman Return. Clark's discussion with his mom that he found nothing was sufficient enough for that plot point.

That's what you say. For me, watching Superman explore the ruins of the planet Krypton is better than just hearing him talk about it.

I am really getting excited about this film. I have always been a "DC Guy" its been hard for me to get to worked up over the Marvel films unless they been really well done. I remember seeing Green Lantern's origin on Challenge of the Superfriends as a little kid.

Plus I am a big fan of Martin Campbell films. His clear enthusiasm for the subject just adds to my own.

I agree. Especially since I remember hearing how majestic and beautiful the footage was. It would have been nice to see.

Comics Continuum and World's Finest are hearing that, as most figured was a no-brainer, there'll be an animated Green Lantern DTV released in summer 2011 to take advantage of the release of the feature film. However, they're hearing that it won't be a sequel to Green Lantern: First Flight, but will instead look at the origins of the Green Lantern Corps and may be an anthology in the style of Tales of the Green Lantern Corps.

World's Finest is also hearing that Warner Animation has given the go-ahead to a Green Lantern animated series (presumably the Bruce Timm series) with an initial order of 26 episodes. As usual, Warners declined to comment prior to any official announcement being made.

Sorry for the double post, but there is fresh news to pass along. Variety reports that Angela Bassett has joined the cast of Green Lantern. She'll be playing Amanda Waller. Warners announced last year that they're developing Suicide Squad, so perhaps they're introducing Bassett as Waller in Green Lantern with an eye to keeping her in the role in Suicide Squad if it gets off the ground.

In other DC news, several sites with sources inside Warners have relayed that they're hearing the studio is tentatively planning to release two DC superhero films in 2012, namely Chris Nolan's third Batman film and The Flash.

This is an impressive cast. And having Angela Basset in anything is good in my book (mind you, CCH Pounder, who voiced this character on an animated movie would also have been a good choice, as would Pam Grier, who played her on Smallville).

Waller's a lot more heavy-set than Bassett, but hey, it's the movies. She's a good choice (she played a somewhat similar part on Alias).

The studio really should be able to get going soon with The Flash. They're already familiar with David S. Goyer's treatment/script from a few years ago. They didn't greenlight it, but Goyer's work must have given them some ideas. They can also refer back to the 1990's TV series, which is useful as a template for a big-budget film. The Flash is terrific because the studio doesn't have to figure him out anymore. Wonder Woman, on the other hand, defies all attempts to find the right approach.
