"Green Lantern" concept art...

I don't know what you mean by "pull it off". Just have him be a good guy, with some foreshadowing. That's easy.

I think what they meant was that the name is a give away. Its like having a character named "Evilo" who turns out to be the bad guy (as Sinestro will) and no one having a clue.

Heck, everytime a character has the name DAMIEN I am ALWAYS on alert!!!

I'll agree with what's being said about "Sinestro" being a little too cartoonish for something that's trying to be a real-world movie. I recently saw the animated film "Green Lantern: First Flight" which tried for that despite being animated, and Sinestro's name bugged me right from the start.

And I already knew the characters.

Might be better if they do start out with him having another name, at some later point dubbing himself "Sinestro".

Martin Campbell, director of the film, already said they weren't going for a "real world movie" or something in the vein of the Nolan Batman movies. This'll be more in line with films like Iron Man, which unabashedly embraced its comic-book origins.

Notice that Iron Man never once used Stane's villain name "Iron Monger" and just had everyone call him Obadiah. Course, by the time he became the Monger there wasn't much time for a name change...

Stane used the term "Iron Monger" loosely.

Yes, but he used it the way its' used in real life so I don't think that counts.

Then again, Tony himself didn't use the "Iron Man" name until the Newspapers came up with it.

It seems they're going by the rules set by Raimi's Spidey movies where the characters get their names from someone else trying to be theatrical (the wrestling announcer, Jameson).

"While you were still learning how to SPELL YOUR NAME!...I...was being trained...to enforce ORDER!"

There's a kind of a logic to it - the character is concerned with concealing their identity and probably with avoiding interaction with people as much as possible while in disguise. They know who they are, and don't want others to know. People talking or writing about them, though, need a nickname to hang on them.

Of course, wanting to avoid notice doesn't explain designing brightly colored costumes.

The other popular rationale being the "call sign" thing for teams.

Literal translations of old comic book drawings = silly looking movie. Of course they need concept art; there's no other way to work out practical designs.

It'd be like taking the 1966 version of the Enterprise and using it in a huge contemporary version of the show - uh-uh.

Bad example, since you know damn well that a huge group of people here are now saying, "Ummm, what's wrong with that?"

I don't think the issue of his name giving away evilness is a big deal if he looks like that

That and the fact that he's rumored to be played by Mark Strong...

That'd be like casting Tim Curry. Do you really expect him to play a good guy? :p
