*groan*I dimly recall reading the producers have a 3-film arc in mind and those bits are small building blocks for GL2 & 3.

Yeah, The Dukes of Hazzard really was The Waltons of the early 80's.
I think the Nolan Batman movies have set up a pretty good model: save your A-list villain for the sequel. That gives you something to interest audiences again and gets you two movies out of the two key elements of any superhero story - the origin and the arch-nemesis.
Then you coast in on the third and get your trilogy box-set.
