Green Lantern (2011)

Yeah, I thought of Tomar-Re and his mask. Even Sinestro did, I think, in early flashbacks to his GL career.

What makes the mask look most artificial, IMAO, is what they do to Reynolds' eyes when he's wearing it. The notion of sort-of-whiting-them-out is a nifty little acknowledgment of the comics but come on, eyes are probably the hardest thing to sell in CG as it is.

The one thing that bothered me is the mask and the short scene of the alien GL explaining that it's there to hide his identity.

Now i'm no DC expert (Marvel man myself) but i always thought that being a GL was a full time job and highly prestigious so if you were chosen it would occupy your entire time and you wouldn't hack it like Superman for example.

Are there more GLs who wish to keep their identities secret so they can have a "normal" life or is Jordan somewhat uniqe in this?

Otherwise the movie is really growing on me.. even the costume which looked very CGI and fake in the initial trailer is somewhat becoming less annoying.. maybe they worked on the SFX?

Jordan has had a number of day jobs to support himself over the years, being a Green Lantern pays nothing. In the 1990s, DC had a series centred around the 'Darkstars', a rival organisation to the GLC set up by 'The Controllers' (Brothers to the Guardians of the Universe). In that, Darkstars were paid in gold bars and also Humans were not permitted to have a full-powered Darkstar suit.

What ever happened to the Controllers?

I'm not actually sure - they were around for a bit in the 1990s and the odd ones has shown up here and there but I'm surprised that Johns didn't work them into his mythology - I *think* they do turn up in one of his stories but I'm vague on the details...

The new footage is awesome! :techman:

As for the mask, he probably won't have it on in most of his scenes as GL since he doesn't need to wear it when operating in space (where roughly half the movie is set).

Johns did. In the storyline introducing Larfleeze and the orange light, a group of them go to Okaara and try to take it from him. Doesn't go well for them.

Interesting. What I'm drawn to, looking at it, is the very digital shading on the mask itself followed closely by the Photoshop-looking drop-shadow around the edges. I didn't even notice the eyes.

Back in the days of wonky sets, matte lines, and strings on spaceships, we didn't give a shit as long as the story held up.

Yeah, but I'd bet that if you could really see Reynolds' eyes that stuff would be less distracting. What you see is...a CG thing sitting in the middle of a face without real eyes.

Someone on another board pointed out that there aren't even lashes.

The astronomer's take on the trailer at AICN was interesting, but there are respects in which this kind of thing is entirely beside the point - for example, it's silly to suggest that FTL travel is acceptable on any level for any distance and then quibble that the distance between galaxies is too great. Might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb, and all that.

The thing that was always cool about the mask, established very early on in the comic, is that nothing holds it in place except the ring and that it was always drawn that way.

Works for me; he certainly looks like Hal Jordan.

Let the bitching about the "boots" commence.

The GL outfits take "skin-tight" to another level, don't they? Somehow the little alien Guardians still show discretion in the area of the package.
