Green Lantern (2011)

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

I think the mythology of GL, particularly Hal Jordan, would be great for a series of movies. I just hope it can be pulled off on the screen. I'm going in with low expectations after seeing the trailer. Why does Tomar Re look like he swallowed a barrel? Hopefully, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

Oh, I think Tomar and the other alien GLs look great - particularly Kilowog and Sinestro. Of course they're not going to look exactly like the comic book versions.

As a Green Lantern fan since the beginning my expectations are very high based on the trailer - as far as faithfulness to the comics over the long haul are concerned. I'm less sanguine about the movie's commercial prospects - it's not a James-Bondish story about a guy with cool gadgets fighting terrorists and corporate thugs, but a rather exotic and kind of dated space opera concept (the Lensman stories are often cited as a likely inspiration for the Silver Age version of GL) and that's pretty clear when one sees it visualized full-out on the screen.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

I don't see anything about the GL concept that would be particularly off-putting for audiences if the action is exciting and the characters are engaging.

It's hard to say based on what we have seen, but I am still optimistic at this stage.

Being out-and-out space opera didn't hurt STAR WARS or AVATAR . . . .

I don't think mainstream audiences are nearly as mundane in their tastes as box-office prognosticators sometimes think, especially in an era in which Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Transformers are blockbuster franchises.

One hopes not (though Transformers is a little out of place in that list IMAO; it's very contemporary). I have my doubts.

Now, if Johnny Depp were playing G'Nort I'd feel a lot better.

I was mostly talking about the fantastic nature of the subject matter, not the setting. If a series about giant shape-changing robots from outer space isn't too far-out for the general public, why would they have a problem with the Green Lantern Corps?

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

It's actually the setting that I'm concerned about - some of the stuff I like the most in the trailer is the visualization of Oa, the alien Green Lanterns, all of the things that are exotic and evocative of the comics...but that's also the kind of thing that's most removed from the experience of the audience. And I wonder how much of that there is in the movie.

Avatar grounds the characters in a military environment where the people and equipment are almost peculiarly contemporary, and I doubt the (apparently) mostly earthbound setting of Thor is accidental.

I suppose. But the whole point of AVATAR seemed to be its exotic alien setting. Most of the movie involved the hero encountering its wonders, learning how to fly giant winged lizards, etc.

And the STAR WARS movies, both good and bad, take place entirely in an exotic, imaginary universe--and nobody seems to mind.

So a couple of scenes of Oa shouldn't be a problem . . .

And, like I said, I have to imagine that Harry Potter, Clash of the Titans, or Pirates are pretty removed from the experience of the audience! But those movies were all hits.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

I'm optimistic about quality based on what I'm seeing, but dubious about box office.

I'd say it's a pretty safe bet for a good opening weekend. Reynolds is reasonably popular and the promo shots of him in his keeks *underwear and tight cozzie will probably help with the female audience. The big SFX-y shots will do their usual work. Then you'll have 'From the director of Casino Royale', the DC Logo and a blizzard of action.

It may not have Dark Knight-type legs, but I think it'll be a hit of Iron Man type proportions.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

I thought they'd use more of a Men in Black template - albeit less comical - for the marketing: a cocky young guy is inducted into an organization where he's astounded to come face to face with all manner of bizarre aliens. There was a bit of that in the trailer, but they also tried to put in a lot of other elements and that initial central hook wasn't hit as strongly as it could have been.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

^ I think they also wanted a bit of an Iron Man vibe.
Yeah, true. I presume there'll be a second trailer, perhaps attached to Sucker Punch next month. By that time there should be a lot more completed FX shots that can be shown. It'll be interesting to see what they do with that trailer in terms of tone and which elements are stressed.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

I'm a little concerned about the silly side of the GLC appearing onscreen. I'd much rather have a more serious attempt at a good scifi story and not see some of the more Toy Story-like Green Lanterns such as squirrels, raccoons, a pumpkin-like Lantern with spaghetti coming out the bottom of it (Apros). I think cool looking aliens are great, but seeing a one-eyed carrot with a ring just jolts me out of the story.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

Keeks is slang for underwear. Cozzie = costume.

Surprised you don't understand 'tight' ...

Well, as an adjective modifying a word I didn't recognize it was kind of meaningless. I was assuming that "tight cozzie" wasn't some unlikely anatomical remark about one of the Kardashians...

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

I think we'll get the second trailer attached to "Sucker Punch" as well. I think it's Warner Bros next big film, makes sense. The use of the rock music in the trailer was the thing that put me off most about the first trailer. I am hoping that we'll hear some of James Howard Newton's score in the second trailer. The rock music just added a totally different vibe that didn't match the scope the trailer was going for. I think we'll probably get some Sinestro and Hector Hammond shots in the next one.
