Greatest sci-fi/fantasy character of all time?

I nominate The Fantastic Four!

Well, it's obvious, isn't it? Says right on their covers: THE WORLD'S GREATEST COMIC MAGAZINE! And the world's greatest comic magazine must have the world's greatest characters, right? :D

(Tongue in cheek, but I'm serious about nominating them. They've always been my favorites.)

Yeah, same here. Despite brief flirtations with other characters (X-Men, Dr. Strange, Captain America), I always come back to the FF. Lee and Kirby's best creations IMO. Weird science, heroics, family, and modern incarnations of the Elements to boot. What more could you want?

Number Six (The Prisoner).

Runners-Up: Frank Black, Brother Justin Crowe, Superman, Steve Rogers, Yorick Brown.

toss up between the Joker and Hall-9000 but since Joker ain't really nothing without the Bat

I say Arthur C. Clarke's Hall-9000, you could make an entire movie about that creepy computer

Fantasy owes a debt to Conan, the archtype of Barbarian heroes who start from nothing and rise to become kings.

Sci-fi owes much to John Carter, Space Princesses, weird ancient civilizations, mad scientists and saving the world.

The Doctor, he's a rogue, a scientist, a gentleman, a swordman, a rebel and now all alone.

Superman. He started it all. Men in tights and all that...
I thought that was Robin Hood?

All of the nominations I would have made have already been done:
- Doctor Who
- Londo / G'Kar (agreed with the man of Steele on the joint entry
- Spock
- Captain Kirk

John Crichton from Farscape.

He's basically the cream of the crop of what Earth had produced at the time -- a scientist, an pilot, an astronaut, and a charismatic genius -- who gets whisked to the other side of the galaxy where he winds up at the bottom fo the food chain and is constantly ridiculed about it. Yet despite all the hardships he manages to come out ahead and helps save the Earth as well the entire galaxy despite numerous sacrifices. A real hero.

He's also completely fun to watch, capable of being both serious and goofy (often times at the same time). The pop culture references he used to help maintain his sanity were often great and helped you identify with him all the more.

He is easily my all-time favorite sci-fi character.
