I'd nominate William Shatner as Danny Crane (Boston Legal), Patrick Stewart as Sterling in Jeffrey (has anybody seen that?), Avery Brooks as Dr. Bob Sweeney in American History X, Jennifer Lien in the same movie, and Scott Bakula as Dr. Sam Beckett in the classic Quantum Leap.

EDIT: Oops, didn't see that this had an actual poll. Sorry. Out of the options I'd go with Koenig then. :)

You forgot Avery Brooks in "A Man Called Hawk" (the spin off from Spenser For Hire)

And Kate Mulgrew in "Mrs. Columbo"

Nicole De boer in "The Dead Zone"

Michael Dorn in "Justice League"

What performance was best outside of Star Trek ?

William Shatner as Denny Crane, by far...not even close.

Walter Koenig on BAB-5
Leonard Nimoy's turn as Villain of the week on Columbo..great episode
William Shatner as TJ HOOKER!!!
Avery Brooks in American History X
and best of all

and simply the best performance?
Louis Fletcher from One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest as Nurse Ratched

Check Excalibur and Christmas Carol, he's even better
Patrick Stewart in 'Macbeth'.

Whoopi Goldberg: The Color Purple, Ghost, etc.
But I voted for LeVar Burton in your poll, because he was spectacular in Roots.

For me it's a toss-up between Leonard Nimoy in Vincent and Patrick Stewart in A Christmas Carol (the stage version in which he played everyone).

Honorable mention: Rene Auberjonois as Spider-Man in a record album from the Seventies, and Jonathan Frakes as Captain America from dozens of shopping-mall openings. :p

This Poll definitely needs a "None of the Above" option.

It'd either be Louise Fletcher in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest",

or,

Jeffrey Combs in the the short film "The Black Cat".

I have seen a lot of movies they were in yet I've never seen Stewart or Brooks give any performances outside of Trek that were any different from their performances inside of Trek, so I disagree with them being mentioned as having given any best peformances.

The best performance was Bakula in Quantum Leap, but my favorite performance was Walter Koenig as Bester in Babylon 5.
