Great Baseball Movies

Spring is here in the NH and that means in America that baseball season is underway and rolling. Baseball is a wonderful sport full of Americana and tradition. Sure, football gets a lot more endorsements, energy and even attention but Baseball is just ld school good time.

Go with the family, sit around with fans and friends, eat a $5 hotdog and have a good time at the park.

I love Baseball and plenty of movies have been made around it, teams, fans, players, comedies, dramas. Movie history is filled with baseball.

What are some good, or great, Baseball movies?

Field of Dreams is a great, wondeful, classic of course.

But I'm a huge fan of Baseball Comedy "Major League."

I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed "For the Love of the Game." It's pretty mediocre, but they do a good job hiding it.

Also, I definitely have a soft spot for "A League of Their Own."

Bull Durham and I have to give some love to Major League II. Major League is awesome, but the sequel wasn't half bad either.

I find this thread kinda funny since I have just spent a long time (I work in a Dept store ) looking for a copy of A league of their own My all time favorite Genna Davis movie with The Long Kiss Goodnight as a close 2nd, girl kick ass movie :guffaw:

I have to disagree on ML 2. Didn't "feel" it as much as the original but, as sequels go, I guess it was OK.

Sandlot, great, great movie.

"A League of Their Own" another wonderful movie, thanks mostly to the beauty of Geena Davis.

Eight Men Out is worth seeing. John Sayles is a pretty consistent filmmaker in my opinion.

Being in Dubuque, Iowa, only about 20 miles away from the actual Field of Dreams, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention it.

Others include The Sandlot, Major League, For Love of the Game, The Natural and Bang the Drum Slowly.

Field of Dreams
The Natural
The Sandlot
Bull Durham
A League of Their Own
Angels in the Outfield

I still need to see For the Love of the Game...

The Rookie
Field of Dreams

Though if you make it a Disney five-sport quintuplet feature with The Rookie, Remember the Titans, Miracle, Glory Road and The Greatest Game Ever Played, you might go into a melodrama-induced coma.

I like Bull Durham, but Tim Robbins is one of the worst miscasts in recent years when it comes to actors trying to play athletes.

My top five, err, six:

The Natural
Field of Dreams
A League of their Own
Pride of the Yankees
Eight Men Out
Bull Durham

Two baseball books I would love to see adapted into movies would be Ring Lardner's You Know Me, Al and Michael Bishop's Brittle Innings.

Not a baseball movie but I love The Baseball Furies in "The Warriors". Great heavies who have more of a cult following than the movie itself does. Still dreaming of the sequel, "Warriors 2:Revenge Of The Furies".

A League of Their Own
Eight Men Out
The Sandlot
The Pride of the Yankees

Definately A League of Their Own & The Sandlot.

I haven't seen the whole thing but I liked what I saw of Eight Men Out.

One movie that doesn't seem to be mentioned yet (my apologies if it has been) is Rookie of the Year. It's about a young kid who, after accidentally breaking his arm, has his tendons heal so tightly that he finds himself able to throw a 100 mph fastball, leading to him getting signed as a starter for the Chicago Cubs. It's not a masterpiece but it's a lot of fun, both as a baseball movie & a kids comedy. Gary Busey turns in a great performance as the fading, has-been pitcher Chet "Rocket" Steadman.

Little Big League is a great baseball movie about a kid gets the Minnesota Twins willed to him by his grandfather and he names himself manager. He's actually really smart when it comes to baseball, but the players obviously don't like him. Also, how does a manager react when his star player dates his mom?
