Grand Theft Auto IV

I've been playing this game for a week or two now, I'm about a third of the way through the missions, I think I have 1-2 missions before I unlock Algonquin according to the walk through.

While many aspects of the game are indeed amazing, I'm also finding it incredibly frustrating. The combat/shooting mechanics are just fine, but I can't drive to save my life! What am I doing wrong? Completing any driving mission takes about 5 tries and is annoying as hell... particularly since restarting a mission requires you to drive back from the mission start to the next location every time! There's been several instances where I've come within a hair's breath of giving up on the game.

Even ditching the cops can be incredibly difficult for me. Anytime I'm trying to speed I either a) flip the car on a turn or b) smash head-first into an opposing car or obstruction, bringing me to a dead halt while the baddies get away or the cops catch up to me.

What's the secret? I've tried the handbrake but that makes the car fishtail randomly, so I speed on straightways, brake (left trigger) before/on turns, but I just end up going to damn slow. Any car chase for me usually lasts 5 minutes across the entire city! And any car I get into will be wrecked to pieces in quick succession.

I basically just do everything possible by taxi, walking around looking for one then flinging myself in front of it hoping he stops.

But anyway, positives. The graphics are absolutely amazing. Driving around literally looks like live-action. The tv channels are hilarious, as are the talk radio stations (though I'm pissed there's only 3 of these and the rest are music, I'm already hearing repeats of everything). The internet I just find annoying and the text is too small to read. The general story dialog is pretty funny too.

switching the view when driving helped me a lot. you can cycle through a few views. maybe one of them will help you out?

Dont oversteer, and slow down when you corner, dont worry about using the break, let other cars slow you down, or pedestrians.

^^
That will end up with a) me accidentally bumping a cop car and getting a star or b) getting a star anyway from killing people ;)

I swear I've never been more paranoid of cop cars in my life than playing this game.

The handbrake in the game is a total joke. I find the faster cars the best to drive because they can go from slow to fast very quick so turning slow-ish around a corner is a good tactic. Another thing I find helpful is the stick that controls the camera helps you turn the corner better too.

GTA 5 or whatever comes next needs to improve on driving more than anything else.

Missions where you have to chase someone suck because you don't know if you're actually supposed to take them out or just drive around long enough until you reach a cut scene.

Though if the mission calls for you to take them out and you've already failed, in some instances you'll be able to cut them off because you now know where they're going.

Bang on, a huge mistake by them and needs fixing in next game to make missions less linear.

If you're supposed to reach a cut scene, then it doesn't do any good to fire all your guns and cause civilian death and destruction that won't hurt the other guy but will get the cops' attention, because then after the cut scene you might be screwed depending on the situation.

That's the biggest problem - the heavy scripting. For an open world game, they force you to do the level THEIR way.

Yeah after all the glowing 10/10 reviews for GTA4, it did end up a lot more frustrating and closed than I thought it would. I wish in the future we can get a game that is the detail and graphics of GTA4 with the mechanics and gameplay and abilities and true openness of Crackdown, which is the most fun I've had on just about any game.

Actually I think I'll put down GTA4 for now. I just got Lost Odyssey for $15 brand new, thank you Target clearance! Either that or Assassin's Creed which I also have sitting around.

Piece of advice about driving that I always give - don't try to drive too fast. If you feel the car getting out of control, slow down. I won all of the races without going full pelt once. It's more important not to crash than it is to drive fast. The other people in races, chases etc are idiots and will crash if you give them a chance.

I suck doing chases with motorcycles, so after failing miserably, the next time I parked my car really close to the bike I would have to take and just took the car instead. Then I somehow managed to be coming the other way down the street and ran right into the guy. :)

Well this morning I started playing Lost Odyssey. Kinda pissed its turn based but the graphics are amazing. The game play and format seem identical to LOTR Third Age, which is the first RPG I've ever played. We'll see!

On racing... I had my first racing mission with Brucie. I did it five times and every time I came in 5th or last. It's frickin' impossible! :p The other cars go a million miles an hour, turn perfectly, and only one ever crashed. Screw it.

I couldn't believe it but managed it first time on that mission by just flooring it on the last straight and pipping my way to 1st by a few inches at best, I was so happy

You use the COMET on that that race, which I love so slow corner turns are good because you can quickly reach top speed when you floor it.

It's interesting how many people have problems with the driving in GTAIV. Now I don't know why (it could be all the driving games I've played in my life), but I actually thought the driving in GTAIV was quite easy. Now not as easy as in the previous GTA games, but still not at all hard. I did also like the fact that it felt more real (compared to the previous GTA games).

Some cars, like the Comet, are great at turning while others feel like boats... even among the sports cars there's variation.

With the racing, I think if you can get the lead and not crash, you should be able to win the race. It's how I did the 100% racing thing.

I've only done the one Brucie race, but basically all I did was stay on the road and not crash, and eventually I caught up and took the lead and never looked back. Maybe these races are programmed to have the CPU drivers make mistakes or not be able to catch up.
