Thank god the writer's woke up and realised that's not what we call a likeable character.

Whose this we, most of the fanbase of SG-A who are online seem to like McKay and the rest of the characters obviously like him as you can tell from episodes like The Shrine.

Try watching harder and leave your bias at the door.

I agree with you for the most part, but you really can't say that the other characters, aside from Carson and Keller, treat him very well.

Sheppard/McKay moments prove that they care about each other, from The Shrine alone. McKay acts like a prick and they joke with him...at the end of the say they all care about each other.

^It doesn't usually come across that way. Most of the time you get the feeling the McKay is barely tolerated.

For instance, to Teyla, why is Sheppard "John" and Ronon "Ronon" while McKay is "Doctor McKay" ?

Teyla calls Rodney Rodney all the time.

I seriously fail to see how any of the main characters treat McKay badly. He's an arrogant, sarcastic, doomsayer... of course people are going to take the piss out of him, but it's obvious they all care for him.

Very surprised you seem so convinced no one likes him.

Most of the time, true friendship begins when you can take the piss out of each other and joke about it. Not everything has to be politeness 24:7.

And anyway, I'm surprised they actually DO like him, after 2-3 years of being a complete moron.

Saving there life so often may be the answer to that.

Sheppard and McKay are both very sarchastic just in different ends of the scale, Ronan is cold and distanced and Teyla is probably the nicest one of them all

Respectfully, no she doesn't.

Arrogant ? No, it's not arrogance if you can back it up. He really is smarter than everyone else. There is a very fine line between genius and insanity and McKay walks it as well as he can.

McKay is endlessly bullied on this show. Waving lemons at him to make him do what they want him to do ? They could, at least, act like professionals.

As for Teyla, people say Ronon is a Teal'c substitute when I think he's more like a male Teyla. Everything is just violence, violence violence with the pair of them.

wow lol, glad we learned that, for 5 seasons now i've been burning with anticipation for that question to be answered

Well, there doesn't seem to have been much else in the way of a point. McKay and Keller don't have much screen time together so it's not really progressing the relationship storyline except that he's now got himself in to a competition he can't win.

We need a payback episode. McKay, Ronon and Keller get stuck in some Ancient facility that's about to be destroyed, all the exits are sealed, and all Ronon can do is growl like Chewbacca while McKay gets them out of it.

I voted "poor"

did someone really seriously give this episode an "excellent" ?

the only thing i liked about this episode was the short range teleport, i want one

Hermiod, are you watching the same Atlantis as the rest of us?

Respectfully, no she doesn't.

Watch the last four seasons again, Teyla calls Rodney Rodney all the time. Remember the child-birth scene? I lost count of how many times she called him Rodney. She does it all the time.

"It's not arrogance if you can back it up"?? What?? Go find a dictionary definition for the word arrogance. It has nothing to do with whether a person can back it up or not, the fact remains, he goes on constantly about how much smarter he is than everybody else. Are you honestly saying that that doesn't deserve just a little bit of piss-taking or goading from the others?

McKay is endlessly bullied on this show. Waving lemons at him to make him do what they want him to do ? They could, at least, act like professionals.

Endlessly bullied?? Can you honestly not see McKay being rude to everyone, shouting at them, telling them how much dumber they are compared to him, acting all superior, BULLYING Zalenka etc..? Seriously, have you not noticed any of that in the past 4 years?

Waving lemons at him? What, once by Sheppard? Or was it Mitchell? Yes, because they were obviously going to crush said lemon with their hand, and rub the juice inside his mouth. Lighten up.

Act like professionals?? This is Stargate ffs, not Law and Order or JAG!

I happen to like the McKay character, I HATED him in the first couple of years for reasons stated previously, but the writer's have finally matured him a bit, and made him FAR less annoying. Thank god.

If it's not mean spirited, then fine, but I see no evidence that it isn't.

In fact, McKay sometimes even underestimates his own ability. If he was arrogant, he'd assume he could solve every problem. He doesn't, he often says he can't solve a problem and then solves it anyway.

The fact is that he's irreplaceable, the others are not.

Both.

If he has to constantly remind people why he is the expedition's chief scientist, a position nobody seems to respect, then that's their fault, not his. They all would have been food for those giant whale-like things at the bottom of the ocean if it wasn't for him. I see no reason why he should treat anyone with respect when he received none from day one.

I'm amazed he even still works for the Air Force considering they packed him off to Russia for hideous crime of being right.

I've never seen JAG, but they don't act like professionals on Law and Order either, but that's a subject for another thread.

Because that wouldn't be contrived at all.

Here's the thing. People don't know how to deal with people. Mozart was treated like he was insane when he was really a genius. Galileo, Einstein, Columbus.

Tom Cruise, too.

The other thing you have to remember is that this is a television show and one of the things that made McKay popular was the fact that he was such a colossal asshole to everyone else. Drama comes from conflict, so the writers are putting McKay in a position where he's squirming. Because they think its entertaining.

I think you're taking this far, far too seriously Hermiod. Time to take a dremamine and chill the F out.

Of course it's contrived, I just contrived it.

A prime example of what I meant about you not paying attention. You'll find that I can discuss a great many things and not take any of them personally, despite what you read in to what I say.

I can see why they write the character this way, but it's doing him a disservice. It does not make sense to belittle the character the audience can identify with the most. Your average Stargate fan is not a 6'4" action hero or an officer in the Air Force, they've got a lot more in common with McKay or Woolsey than Sheppard or Ronon.

I would never have guessed otherwise. Too, I'm not Google, I can't recall every last thing you've ever typed on every site on the 'net, so if you're going to go and cite examples in such a broadstroke fashion, be more specific. Helps to prevent misunderstandings. ;)

I see what you're saying. Then again, I suppose you could ask why McKay is the only one who gets treated this way. Could it be that he's NOT the one we're supposed to relate to the most? I mean, Carter was every bit the genius McKay is, yet no one treated her like crap. Ditto Daniel, who got some ribbing from Jack every now and then, but you know what? Shepard is really the only one who gives McKay any shit. And as we've seen, he thinks of McKay as a good friend. So I don't see what the problem is.

So what if Ronon is being an ass? Isn't that part of the whole point of his character? Weir, Teyla, Ford, Beckett, they all put up with Rodney's ego.

You want to complain on behalf of someone who gets treated unfairly, lets start talking about how your homeboy McKay treats Zelenka, who has on occasion, been portrayed to probably be the better scientist of the two if only because he doesn't broadcast his ego the way McKay does. Even Carter was talking shit about Zelenka behind his back, which if you ask me, is rather rude and highly unprofessional for a person who was in her position at the time.

Think about it. How many times did Trip and Archer pick on TPol? How many times did Riker toy around with Worf? Odo with Quark? Jack and Daniel? Vala and Daniel? Carter and McKay? A certain level of antagonism exists in every relationship, and sometimes it is more obvious than in others. Why is it that this particular case is so egregious?
