Spoilers Gotham - Season 2

It will no doubt be revealed the guy Jim shot was not killed but it was faked by Penguin to put Jim under his control.
I am more interested in where Barbaras shoes got to.

The most sensible way to try to break into the batcave is with a fertilizer bomb!
This is pre-batcave. Bruce will no doubt build a much better door.

After they blew it open, I thought... What if it revealed a hall with another door.

I wasn't thinking of the door but choice of explosive. I would think Alfred would know where to get some C4 or dynamite at least, or a thermal lance. Fertilizer bomb just seemed kind of out there, though I guess they had everything on hand, lol.

That much explosive would have collapsed the house. But it fit right into the show and it's over the top, makes no sense, just do whatever, craziness.
I am so glad they brought back Jimcam for this seasons premiere. I don't think we saw it since the very first ep and didn't really need to see it ever again.
Glad Selena is doing so well hanging with the Penguin. Hope Ivy is good as well.

This series has gone so far into the level of camp all the need now is for Adam West to show up.

Uncomfortable alliance aside, the shooting was in self-defense--just the baddie was a worse shot than a trained policeman.

It wasn't the scene, but the lack of a clear choice in favor of the dark side that bothered me. At least set it up right.

Still like the show. It is supposed to be over the top and a bit camp. Keeping the balance will be key.

I didn't see Ben Edlund's name in the opening credits -- does anyone know if he's no longer on the writing staff of this show?

Uncomfortable alliance aside, the shooting was in self-defense--just the baddie was a worse shot than a trained policeman.

Again, self-defense doesn't apply because Jim initiated the confrontation. If he hadn't chosen to confront the guy and take his money, then the shootout would never have happened; therefore, it was Jim's decision that led to his death. You do not get to claim self-defense if you started the fight. If the show attempts to claim that it was self-defense, then that will be misrepresenting the way the law works.

Also, it doesn't matter, because the homicide happened during the commission of a crime. Jim assaulted the man and stole his money at gunpoint. Even if it was dirty money, he was still committing armed robbery. If you commit a crime and someone dies as a consequence of that act, even if it's entirely by accident, then that makes it felony murder. There was even a case where a police car was chasing a suspect and killed an innocent bystander, and it was the guy they were chasing who got charged with the murder, because the bystander wouldn't have been killed if the suspect hadn't fled the police. Heck, if Jim had run away and the guy had tripped and fallen and broken his neck, Jim would still be on the hook for felony murder.

On reflection, I've realized that Icemizer's suggestion that it was faked can't be ruled out entirely; as I recall, Jim took the guy's gun, so it could be that the gun was loaded with blanks. But I don't see how Penguin could successfully blackmail or control Jim with a murder charge if there was no evidence of an actual murder, no body or forensics to pin to him. Not to mention that Penguin is so casually ruthless and bloodthirsty that he'd think nothing of actually killing one of his own people, so why would he waste the effort of faking it? That seems out of character. And Jim's still on the hook as a conspirator in the murder of Loeb's guard, because that happened as a result of an action that Jim requested Penguin undertake. There's no way that was faked.

I'm pretty sure I heard he was working on another show, yeah.

As long as there is Morena Baccarin in a nighty, I'll keep watching.

But yeah, I hated that Jim thought asking another favor from Penguin was his only option. And that sure went to hell.

On a serendipitous note, earlier in the evening we'd watched an episode of Grounded for Life - a family sitcom starring Donal Logue. In later episodes he bought a bar. So we got to see him tending bar twice last night.

I thought the premiere was great. Some things are kinda campy and over the top, but I'm digging that aspect of the show. Can't wait for next week's episode.

And what was that bizarre claim of Penguin's that Loeb had no vices and couldn't be blackmailed? He was monumentally corrupt! He was the root of the police corruption in Gotham! Are we seriously supposed to believe that there was nothing that could be used to blackmail him? That makes no sense whatsoever.

This invalidates everything that you have ever said, since clearly you were not paying attention.

I thought this was a pretty great premiere. I thought they managed to balance the character stuff, with the crazy stuff pretty well this time.
I don't think Jim killing the goon was anywhere near as bad as Christopher does. There might be all sorts of real world issues with it, but I really don't give crap about real world issues, I'm just interested in the where it will go in the show. At this point I don't watch Gotham for realism, I just watch it to enjoy it's crazy over the top story.
Crazy Barbara is a lot of fun. She was boring as sane girlfriend, but she's already a lot more fun as a crazy villain.
I was a little surprised we didn't see Harvey back as a cop by the end of the episode.
I am curious to see where exactly they are going with the Penguin/Jim stuff. I don't really have a problem with them having Jim go to a darker place. I can understand wanting to see him keeping himself clean as he fights against all of the dirt and corruption, but I can see why the writers would want to have him having to do some questionable things to get where he needs to be.
It will be very interesting to see what they are setting up with Nygma. At first I wasn't real thrilled with him being a killer during the season finale, but I did find last night's scene with him very intriguing.
I still don't know how they can try to deny that Jerome is Joker at this point. He's definitely acting very Jokerish, and it would honestly feel like they were purposefully screwing with us if he ended up not being. I wouldn't put it past the writers to do that to us, but I hope they don't.
I'm still disappointed that they decided to just stick Selina in with the villains. I really liked her and Bruce together, but I don't see them being able to have the same kind of relationship if she's a full on villain now.

Ratings down for the premier

Over at Fox, “Gotham” (1.6/5 in 18-49, 4.5 million viewers overall) came in about 50% below its year-ago launch in 18-49 (3.3) and was also about 15% lower than its winter-spring average (1.9). It was followed by a modest debut for “Minority Report” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 3.1 million viewers overall), based on the 2002 Steven Spielberg film of the same name.

I don't know why the season is called "Rise of the Villains" -- isn't that what the show is (partially) about? And just seems like they're ramping it up - a lot. Seems like much, but we'll see.

Bruce is acting mature yet also a kid at the same time, in a realistic way.

Interesting to see his growth into Batman. David is a great fit for the role as Bruce.

ALso, i know they're kinda keeping the setting "timeless", but definitley feels like the late 90s here (answering machines still being used, though Thomas Wayne had a flat panel monitor in his "ManCave") ... too bad there's absolutely no connection to the movies...would love to see some of these guys in one with an adult Batman.

And crazy Barbara - would make an interesting villain, but it all seems like it came out of nowhere... did i miss it last season. Were her parents secretly abusive or something? It kinda bothers me when they switch the character of a character between seasons, because they didn't do a good job the previous season (like Lourdes in Falling Skies). But maybe she'll be more interesting.

She lost it at the end of last season when she was kidnapped by the serial killer, The Ogre, and ended up killing her parents.
