Gotham - Season 1

This show isn't supposed to be canon, as far as I am aware. It's just one of may interpretations of this corner of the DC universe, so I don't see giving Joker an in-depth origin as being a problem, or having any impact on Batman stories past and future. As long as it's a good, entertaining story, I'm happy to see what the writers can do with him.

I liked this episode. Using the colorful circus characters was a lot of fun. And I really liked the Joker-ish kid. That was a really good acting scene where he goes manic at the end. Hell, there was snot leaking out his nose. Well done!

This episode seemed a little off to me. Especially Barbara adjusting immediately to two teenaged girls squatting in her apartment.

Well, she was pretty clearly wasted when she found them, so that would explain it.

Well, sure...but you'd have to be really wasted to just accept that right off the bat (no pun intended). I mean, not even a little argument or suspicion? Not even a little interrogation or explanation?

I don't know. I guess it's not a big deal, but just struck me as not very believable.

Point is that Barbara clicked immediately that these squatters answered the phone a couple weeks back and "pretended" to be Jim's new beau, meant that Jim did not have a new Beau.

The youngest Barbara could be is 22?

14 year olds and 22 year olds can/do hang out if there is a reason or a modifier.

The modifier usually being family or booze.

I can only echo the previous sentiments about enjoying seeing the Flying Graysons, the Joker kid's psychotic facial turn, and how freaking gorgeous Morena Baccarin is.

I had her first name right, but I was rhyming her surname with "saccharine."

It was an ok episode, but it certainly wasn't their best. And I'll be honest, I'm a little tired of Fish Mooney.

I've been tired of her for most of the series, but this was the first time I was actually impressed by her.

You know, I think it was nice of the writers to allow Barbara to spend some quality time with people her own age.

Seriously, Barbara is my single least favorite aspect of the show (which is a pity because she's suppose to be Jim's wife in the future). There's absolutely nothing redeeming about the character and I was thrilled by her long absence.

With the introduction of so many known villain, I'm beginning to wonder if the show is deliberately rewriting comic history by showing how Gotham handles such villains in a world without Batman. Sure, people like Poison Ivy and Catwoman still have more than a few years to go before becoming a threat, but The Joker, The Riddler, Penguin, Scarecrow, etc., all could start up any given moment (hell, Penguin just needs to find the right footing before becoming a serious threat).

If that's the case, then I'm even more interested in how the Bruce Wayne storyline will develop.

Not necessarily. When Frank Miller introduced Barbara Kean to the main DC Universe (after her previous appearance in an alternate Earth), he used her as Jim Gordon's first wife, whom he left to be with Sarah Essen. I'm not sure how that fits with Essen being his boss in this series, but it does suggest that Barbara's long-term fate is to be Jim's ex.

Naturally. That's the whole point of an adaptation: to rewrite the story into a new form, to rework the elements of one story into a fresh and different version. Any TV series must serve its own story needs first and foremost, and the source material can be reworked as necessary to suit that. (Even when it's based on history instead of fiction -- for instance, BBC America's The Musketeers killing off Cardinal Richelieu several years prematurely because Peter Capaldi got a better gig.)

Barbara and Fish are utter wastes of space. It feels like they contracted the actresses for a full first season, but now they have absolutely no idea what to do with them. I would be utterly shocked if they both were not booted in the season finale.

The new Fish side story is awful and so god dam random it's almost at the 24 Kim vs. The Cougar level Fish should of of just stayed away and came back later on in the season or next season.

Easily my pick as creepiest scene in the series so far. I got a bit of a chill when he turned maniacal.

She really got on my nerves as well. Morena's character is a breath of fresh air. I love the way Gordon is completely taken aback by the openness with which she approaches their relationship. Jim sometimes looks a little scared of her. THIS I can understand.

Fish's storyline has really taken an interesting turn. After opnely killing the "boss", I thought, well she just showed the others how to rise to power. But having her unite them into a family was a brilliant premise. No doubt all of the prisoners have some type of family, so getting them to relate to one another in that way was just genius. And they then immediately saw positive results from their efforts and sacrifices.

I wasn't surprised that she paid special tribute to the prisoner who voluntarily gave his life. Fish may be building an army. If so, Penguin, Falcone, better look the hell out.

I made a quip about Morena Baccarin's acting a few weeks back, but she's really grown on me as Thompkins. If she's supposed to be the complication and we're supposed to be rooting for Jim and Barbara, the show's messing it up.

Like I said, Barbara's role in the comics was basically to be dumped, so I think her relationship with Jim here was specifically set up to fail. I'm not sure why they still have her in the cast, though. Unless it's so they'll have an excuse to keep using that big, expensive apartment set. Or maybe they have some storyline in mind for her and Montoya.
