Got an F in starship design...

Cary - I know you stated that you weren't being negative and if my post came off as overly defensive, I apologize. One thing that has always set me off is to be accused of doing something I did not do. I realize you weren't necessarily doing that, but that's the thing with the internet and paranoid people like me, sometimes you read into things stuff that just isn't there. I absolutely believe in giving credit where credit is due which is why I still point out that my Edward Teller model is based on Ralph McQuarrie's design even though I have changed it quite a bit from his concept.

I do recall you having seen my design, and even commenting on it, so I was just curious if I might have provided a bit of inspiration to you.

Well, this one sentence made me feel a little sick to my stomach. Did I see it before? Did I subconsciously take someone's design and claim it as my own?

I scoured the internet with an intensity usually reserved for porn. I couldn't find where I commented on your ship but I can't deny that once I clicked on your links and saw the animated pics of the cutaways those did look familiar to me. Admittedly the similarities are striking.

I can't deny it's an awesome ship, well thought out, far more than I have with mine. I don't have any deck plans in mind, I've only thought in general terms of the layout, engineering here, crew quarters there, deflector up front, hangar in the back etc..

So I went back to the bathroom, where I do all my profound thinking, and grabbed my sketch book (be cool, it's clean). Went flipping through the pages because most, not all, but most of my models start out there. So here's the drawings that I found scattered about, there were a couple of others but they really only have meaning to me, and it would take more work than it's worth to explain how this squiggle or that smear have anything to do with this ship. Obviously, some of these are before I decided on the final design and some are after I had started building the model.

I'm not posting these as a "see I was right", or to deny that on some subconscious level Cary's design might have served as inspiration, they don't prove that anyway in fact some of them are just embarrassing to share. I just wanted it to be clear that I did put some thought and work into the design, and I didn't just look at Cary's work (which is undeniably awesome) and just smooth a corner or add an edge and then call it my own.

The sketches...

Excuse me to put my nose here, but I saw something like this before...
Cary and Sarvain. You both are respectable citzens, is what i believe based in what you wrote. Subconscious is something that we can´t explain... I have folders full with renderings and sketches, mine and from other peoples, I watched dozens of scifi movies and I have a lot of books with starships. Sometimes I got myself drawing something "new" and later I see that it´s almost like a variation of something that I saw in the past, or have a lot of commom elements with that at least. I think the same can occur with others, and I´ll be happy if my sketches are font of inspiration. Since it isn´t a copy, I see this just as different vision of a tema, sometimes better than the original in which it was inspired. I had a friend (unhappyness now dead), and we shared sketeches all the time, just to see different visions of the same ship at the end.
I know the Cary´s ship as the Sarvain´s ship, and I believe that I have saved an old pic of a Trek ship with a "nose" like that somewhere... :) Again, is hard to know which is "first one", but I believe they aren´t copies, just different visions. ;)
As a different approach, just for reflection: is the marsupial saberthooth a copy of the smilodon or an evolutionary convergence? :D Ok, ok, I know it´s a weird analogy, but you got the idea! ;)
That said friends, I would like to see updates from Cary and Sarvain. ;)

Unneeded, but appreciated nevertheless. :)

Well, the thread was long since "pruned" from the TrekBBS... so as far as I know, the only permanent record of this thread exists on my personal computer. (I've saved archives of the threads from each of the projects I've done which I documented on this BBS, by the way... partly because of the pseudo-legalese desire to protect my work in case someone tries to hijack it... and by that I mean, for example, someone at Cryptic or CBS, or someone else, FOR PROFIT and without credit or compensation... not someone being inspired at some level!.. and partly just because as a professional design engineer, I always keep comprehensive records of my work.)

You were fairly new the to TrekBBS at that point, but you did post a couple of "this is cool" notes back in the day.

Again, I have no qualms whatsoever about anything you've done... I LIKE it. And if you'd happened to come to many of the same results as I'd come to entirely on your own, that would be perfectly cool with me. And if you were inspired, to one extent or another, by my own work... I'd be happy with that as well. So don't sweat it, and PLEASE don't be defensive about it!

^Pretty sure Cary's design pre-dates the Ent-J showing up on Enterprise. Besides, there have been other designs well before the J that uses a feature like that.

I'm pretty sure your right, since the all of the Titan designs were designed before that famous episode aired. At least I think that is the case.
I meant that perhaps the Ent-J influenced Lord Sarvain's design.

I wouldn't be surprised.

Now the question is, did you see what it was and immediately close it out or did you watch it till then end? And since then, have you had the song going through your head? I find Conway Twitty is like a car accident, you can't help but stare...

I like it man, I like it a lot. I think it would fit in nicely for a 25th or even 26th century design. I looks more ship like which I love. You see a traditional hull design in it's DNA. So, what will she do? Warp 12, 15, 20?

I'd like to see a fully textured model soon. Are you using 3DS Max? That's what I use along with CATIA, Solidworks, Cobalt and Graphite. I also use Photoshop and Illustrator too. If you need some decals designs PM me brother.

(I know this thread has been dead for awhile. I came across it during a Google search for Star Trek wallpapers.)

Glad you like it! Unfortunately, I haven't touched this in quite a while, in fact, I'm just kinda burnt out on model building at the moment. I just took a week off from work and thought during that time I would get around to finishing the Edward Teller but unfortunately, despite sitting at the computer several times with the intention of doing something, I ended up going on several google, wikipedia and youtube journeys instead. I'm sure I'll eventually get back to this one though!
