Cary - I know you stated that you weren't being negative and if my post came off as overly defensive, I apologize. One thing that has always set me off is to be accused of doing something I did not do. I realize you weren't necessarily doing that, but that's the thing with the internet and paranoid people like me, sometimes you read into things stuff that just isn't there. I absolutely believe in giving credit where credit is due which is why I still point out that my Edward Teller model is based on Ralph McQuarrie's design even though I have changed it quite a bit from his concept.
Well, this one sentence made me feel a little sick to my stomach. Did I see it before? Did I subconsciously take someone's design and claim it as my own?
I scoured the internet with an intensity usually reserved for porn. I couldn't find where I commented on your ship but I can't deny that once I clicked on your links and saw the animated pics of the cutaways those did look familiar to me. Admittedly the similarities are striking.
I can't deny it's an awesome ship, well thought out, far more than I have with mine. I don't have any deck plans in mind, I've only thought in general terms of the layout, engineering here, crew quarters there, deflector up front, hangar in the back etc..
So I went back to the bathroom, where I do all my profound thinking, and grabbed my sketch book (be cool, it's clean). Went flipping through the pages because most, not all, but most of my models start out there. So here's the drawings that I found scattered about, there were a couple of others but they really only have meaning to me, and it would take more work than it's worth to explain how this squiggle or that smear have anything to do with this ship. Obviously, some of these are before I decided on the final design and some are after I had started building the model.
I'm not posting these as a "see I was right", or to deny that on some subconscious level Cary's design might have served as inspiration, they don't prove that anyway in fact some of them are just embarrassing to share. I just wanted it to be clear that I did put some thought and work into the design, and I didn't just look at Cary's work (which is undeniably awesome) and just smooth a corner or add an edge and then call it my own.
The sketches...
I do recall you having seen my design, and even commenting on it, so I was just curious if I might have provided a bit of inspiration to you.
