Got a new computer screen..

I got a new 22 inch screen. Samsung full HD it's got HDMI and VGA inputs.

Question I had though is this. If I used the VGA inputs would I lose anything in terms of resolution? What's the differences between the two inputs?

A new monitor should have DVI then maybe VGA.

I got a lot of years out of a Samsung monitor.

My old 19 inch LG had DVI and VGA but this one went the other way has VGA and HDMI

But will I lose any screen resolution if I tried the VGA input?
VGA resolution is analog, and starts to get wonky over 2048x1356 (I think that's the resolution) and it requires more oomph from your graphics card to maintain that kind of resolution through an analog signal. That said, for years I used 1680x1050 on an LCD monitor utilizing only the VGA port, and never had any trouble.

Still, keep in mind that DVI is the far superior input between the two, as it provides a sharper, crisper image.

I understand the HDMI, that's a good way to port video in. But older VGA over newer DVI? That's weird.

The most recent Dell monitors I've seen have all 3, but the HDMI is a kind of Dell proprietary thing with only 1 cut corner instead of 2.

I didn't know that.

So what you are saying is that I won't get the full 1920x1080 if I use the VGA input, and if I do it will make my video card work harder..

Is that correct?

You can have a screen resolution of 1920x1080 with the VGA input, it just won't look as sharp and clear as it would with a DVI input. The video card has enough DAC power to handle a VGA port at that resolution (DAC is chip on the card that handles the conversion from digital to analog) unless it's a truly ancient card. Hell, even most onboard graphics cards can handle that.

TL;DR - You can have 1920x1080 resolution via a VGA input and it will look fine, so don't sweat it.

I think I'll stick with the HDMI then, as that's the only other one on my screen.
