News Gord Downie (of The Tragically Hip) Dies

A national treasure. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Thank you for the music.

Gord Downie is a really tough one. Really tough. This guy wasn't a celebrity - he was part of Canada's culture. Canada's spirit animal. Really glad I got to see the Hip 5 times in my life. He was such a good performer, and a poet to boot with an incredible catalog of songs spanning decades. Someone wrote it's the equivalent of the USA losing Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Micheal Stipe all at once - I don't really disagree with that. I've been pretty sad over this one, and I usually don't give much of a fuck when famous people die. We all knew it was coming but it's just really sad nonetheless.

No dress rehearsal,
this is our life.....

Growing up in Buffalo, NY area, The Tragically Hip was almost required listening. I had the privilege to see The Hip several time in my life. I'd like to think I'm richer in spirit for it ....

God speed, Gord.....

I'm preparing myself to cry (a lot) when I watch the premiere of "Long Time Running" tonight.

My husband and I re-watched the final concert last night. We were both getting a little misty eyed. Hubby said, "At least all of this footage exists. His youngest kids can see what a brave, vital man their father was. He didn't stop and wait for the end. He kept doing what he loved...AND... everything he has done to promote awareness of Native issues..."

I think CBC is airing "Secret Path" on Sunday?

First thing we'd climb a tree
And maybe then we'd talk
Or sit silently
And listen to our thoughts
With illusions of someday
Cast in a golden light
No dress rehearsal,
This is our life

And that's where the hornet stung me
And I had a feverish dream
With revenge and doubt
Tonight, we smoke them out

You are ahead by a century
You are ahead by a century
You are ahead by a century

Stare in the morning shroud
And then the day began
I tilted your cloud
You tilted my hand
Rain falls in real time
And rain fell through the night
No dress rehearsal, this is our life

But that's when the hornet stung me
And I had a serious dream
With revenge and doubt
Tonight, we smoked them out

You are ahead by a century
You are ahead by a century
You are ahead by a century

You are ahead by a century
You are ahead by a century
You are ahead by a century
And disappointing you is gettin' me down

Rest in peace, Gord, you were amazing, and hopefully all of Canada's got this.

Rick Mercer's latest Rant is actually a really gracious tribute to Gord Downie, relating the time that Downie wanted information on how to pronounce a particular name of a community in Newfoundland and Labrador and ended up having an hour-long chat with Mercer's dad, who had no idea just who he was talking to (Downie didn't mention he was a famous musician, just "Gord from Kensington, a friend of Rick's").
