Google+?

I got in and I am really liking it. The XKCD comic nails it.

Plus the interface is cleaner, like Facebook was years ago.

I finally got in and... i'm impressed.

It takes a little getting used to but the granular sharing features are far (far) above Facebook's. I love that you can specify circles visibility for EVERYthing you post.

If enough of my friends get on there (so far some are, but I dunno if they will continue to use it) I could see this supplanting facebook for me, especially with the way it integrates neatly into my existing Gmail account.

^I've had the same thoughts.

I also love how you can specify what aspects of your profile each circle can see. For example, under the alternate names heading, I have my Spot's Meow name listed and have it visible only to my TrekBBS circle. This way my pesky family and friends can't go tracking me down here. Though I really don't have much to hide I suppose.

there's still no compelling reason for people to rush out to get G-mail accounts so they can use the +1 feature.

Just as a side note, you can have a google account to access various apps without establishing a gmail account. I haven't had to try it for Google+, but I was able to get my Director set up for calendar and docs using his existing university email account.

I'm signed up but I'm bored already.

Heh. Me too.

I figure I'm there if my friends and family want to add me...but I'm not exactly holding my breath. Facebook seems to be pretty entrenched, and my FL is pretty varied, with all the places I've lived, etc. I don't see a mass-migration any time soon.

Same here. Made an account, but don't really see it as anything special. Biggest thing facebook has going for it is that everyone ELSE is on it as well. If google+ surges and everyone moves there or whatever, I'll pretend to care more, but not really gonna go through much effort otherwise. The facebook interface is fine, everyone's already on it, whatever.

Only thing I see people really raving out (other than those that will bitch about whatever's popular just to bitch) is the Circles thing, and sure Facebook will implement something similar if it stays popular...

The Circles model is at the fundamental core of Google+, it's not something that Facebook can easily implement in the same fashion without doing some massive renovations. That doesn't mean they won't do it, but it's a lot more effort then just some copypasta.

I think as well that a lot of people are treating their G+ accounts as if they were Facebook accounts... which misses a lot of the point and would make it seem pretty boring. Someone wrote a pretty good post about it here: https://plus.google.com/102615863344410467759/posts/3knJzE9jjtG But basically, G+ allows you to easily follow people you don't know as well as people you do and segregate the two. In that way, it's more like a synthesis of the models of Facebook and Twitter. If you treat it as a way of finding content from interesting people who you don't know instead of just treating it like Facebook it suddenly becomes a much more compelling experience.

Agreed. Right now I'm following Felicia Day from the Guild, and some of the Google Product/Engineering people (by Following I mean added them to my following Circle and i'm sure they are not going to be following me). Still looking for more. Not a lot, but they are people who I don't know, who are posting interesting things in public posts.

There's been some speculation out there that this more of a threat to twitter than FB actually. It can definitely be a "Twitter with all of the features of Facebook".

I also really like "Sparks", i've set up a few topics, like video games, sci-fi tv, Game of Thrones, Skyrim (a game I'm looking forward to), NBA, and always find entertaining/interesting articles from blogs not in my Reader.

I understand the aspect of following other people, I'm just not interested in it. I like the cleaner look of Google+ without all that other crap that Facebook kept adding, but we'll see if it stays this simple.

Well, I haven't been back over there since I set up my account, but I sure hope there is a way to prevent people you haven't approved or don't know from following you.

I understand that you can tailor your audience for certain posts with the circles thing...but I don't really get how your privacy will be maintained when anyone who wants can follow you...and (I assume) see all of your profile info.

Maybe I need to go over there and find a FAQ or something before I post (if I ever post).

When I signed up I added a few music-related sparks, and the news feeds seem to be more in-depth than on FB...but I'm not sure if I want to use this account as simply a giant news feed....

you can set the visibility of every little item in your profile . . . all except your name I think

Anyone can follow you, but you can hide nearly all information from people who you aren't following. There's unfortunately not a global change option so you have to set each item individually. But if you want, you can set everything to only be seen by one of your circles and then only share everything you post with just that circle. The entire world can still follow you but they won't see a single piece of information beyond your name if that's what you want. You can even set it so that people who are in your following circles don't see anything in your profile.

Like Facebook, you can preview your profile to see what it looks like for other people which helps when customizing it.

Yeah, anyone can add you to a circle, so if you don't want them to see anything, just make sure every post is designated only for the circles you want to see it. There is a "public" option that will show your post to everyone, or you can select particular circles, or just one circle. I like the whole concept, really. I can finally have friends and co-workers on there, if I feel so inclined. They just get tossed into the circles where nothing interesting will be exposed. :p
