Google Enterprise

Fleet Captain
I was playing around with Google Earth today and I got to thinking about Star Trek. Now I know youre thinking how do those two relate? Well I have this pic
schematicsncc1701a.jpg

And I got to thinking how cool it would be if someone developed a google earth program for say the Enterprise or a bunch of the famous startrek ships. Imagine if you could zoom almost all the way in and see details on the hull. Or if you could do an effect similar to whats in that pic where you can peel away the hull and see the decks inside?
That would F'in Rock...
Dont you think?

Yes..

I guess Im talking hypothetical then. But I personally would LOVE being able to select whatever version of the Enterprise I like. Zoom in on it and see super detail on the hull. To be able to rotate around. To actually be able to see the decks if I want. To click on a dealio that will highlight the phasers or torpedo tubes. All that.
I guess this would be cool for ANY star Trek Ship. If someone made this game/app/program Id buy it.
Can anyone add more details that would be interesting? remember the idea is to keep it like google earth but with the ship instead..

There's someone on YouTube that's doing something like that using VRML. Click here for some of his videos. He also has a homepage here for some of his work so far.

Ive still got that picture somewhere, it came with the old AMT model kits if i remember.

Still, love the idea, and i do remember the 1701-D one, vaguely but i do remember it.

Eric that is exactly what i was thinking about. The graphic are a little sh!tty but Im not complaining. Cool. I guess you could call it a virtual model. Of course I know it would be even better with super hi-resolution. I wonder why they dont take this type of idea and make an official Virtual Model?
This will keep me busy for a while...:techman:

The graphics of that really belong in the mid 90s. But granted, it's big project to undertake.

I wonder... Can we improvise.

Say we took some deck plans, and instructed the computer to construct walls where the lines are, and carpet the corridors. To automate the graphics assembly as much as possible.

And rather than explicitly defining that much graphics, we could define them as "fractals", as small set of textures which recursively add detail as we zoom in on something.

It would be much easier to do this as a top down view of deck slices rather than a fully immersive 3D view, and we might even be able to use photos from the show to use as textures in some cases.

Hmmm...

Good idea, but it would take a massive amount of work, IMHO.
This is how good ideas start, though. :vulcan:

Mr Adventure. That's more along the lines of what I was thinking. Still if I had my way I would make it even more realistic and detailed. I doubt this could all be done short of having a regular video game production team doing it.
Too bad we cant suggest this as something that a lot of us would want...
Imagine being able to pick your favorite ship from Star Trek and being able to examine in Hi-resolution 3-d graphics...
We can dream cant we?

So Im looking at that link and I realize that this guy built it using Google Earth. I didnt know you could do anything like that. Maybe this really can be done....Holy $h!t...

I like the 1701-D video with the blueprints, but the problem is that it's not a program you can walk through. I think that's the advantage with brookestephen's channel. It looks like he'd like to make it something that people could use to walk around in. And the graphics are a relatively minor detail because that's something that could be constantly tweaked and improved in later versions. I'm not that familiar with that kind of computer work but wouldn't one just have to go back into the program and carve out more polygons and texture map it or something?

Do none of you play 3D shooter games? Voyager Elite Force, Elite Force II, anyone? That would be the best head start on creating a virtual environment. The mechanics are already in place, you just need to create the visuals.

Yeah Im not very knowledgeable in that area either or Id start something. But looking at the 1701-d model it looks like the guy made it with google earth. I thought there was a program in Google earth (Ive havent checked it out yet) where you can build your house and model it and upload it to google earth for everyone to be able to see. Maybe that guy used that program to make that model of the Ent-d?
If thats true then that means we could make our own. I wonder if we could assign parts to a bunch of people who would be interested and then somehow group them into 1 or whatever. We could even have different divisions working on different ships.
Just an idea...
Im going to Google earth to see if this is feasable...:bolian::klingon::techman::borg:
