Good to see dads getting a good name for a change...

A general question - forgive me if it's a little OT...

But why should a deleted scene mean...well, anything? It could have been deleted simply for purposes of time, but it could also be deleted because TPTB decided it didn't belong in the movie - that it no longer fit the characters or the backstory.

Not that such things aren't interesting, but they need to be taken with SEVERAL grains of salt.

....actually a fairly good point, JustKate. I suppose people could take deleted scenes as possible points that can be considered as evidence for certain arguments. It would probably help that when the DVD/Blu-Ray is released and has deleted scenes as, that there's a preface by JJ or the writers/producers stating why it wasn't included. Once they make that clear it can be then be determined in the scene is worthy of being used as 'canon' reasoning.

It was probably deleted because it did more harm to the story than good. It was plot baggage. If George leaving is what turned rule-follower Jim into a rebellious kid, then their relationship must've been quite important and merited more exploration. It would've overshadowed the influence George Sr. was supposed to have had on young Jim's life. So, it would've unnecessarily complicated the story, and added unneeded time to the movie (it's not like the events advanced the plot at all).

In my opinion, it was better to get rid of the scene and leave it hang as they did. That is, that Jim turned out to be a little shit because Nero killed his father, and not because brother George got fed up with their uncle and left home.
