Good lord Trek lit is confusing.

WOW.
I live overseas and only have the first 2 instalments of the Vanguard series. Can someone tell me how many there are to date?
So far I find this series FASCINATING. And I like the not-so-legal ship parked in the lower bays. (Where people go for not-so-legal activities.:evil::devil::evil::devil:
Thanks in advance.

^ There currently are four novels in the series, with a fifth scheduled for release in December:

Harbinger
Summon the Thunder
Reap the Whirlwind
Open Secrets
Precipice

There's also a "prequel" of sorts, in the SCE novella Distant Early Warning (which isn't required reading for those who don't read the SCE series or e-Books in general). Finally, one of the stories in the Shards and Shadows anthology, "The Black Flag" by James Swallow, offers a Mirror Universe take on the Vanguard storyline and some of its characters.

Thank you very much. I will see what I can do about getting the ones I don't have.

And thanks to all Writters, Publishers, etc. for lending their time to this great website.

No, no, no. The TOS elements are the marshmallow -- they're the minority ingredient. Most of the content of VNG is original. The TOS content is such a small part of the mix that it's totally untrue to say it's "overshadowing" the rest.

OK, I got the flavours backwards. But, I'd rather the marshmallow be an occasional surprise rather than something that shows up in every spoonful. The last two books have added a bit more marshmallow to the mix. I'd rather it had been nuts or a cherry. Don't eliminate the marshmallow but don't overdo it either.

The marshmallows should just come separately, so each reader can simply add the appropriate amount to suit his or her taste.

WARNING...

METAPHOR BREACH IMMINENT!!!

^ Actually, it will eventually be learned that this gizmo was in fact constructed using reverse-engineered Shedai technology.

(The gooey stuff in Reap the Whirlwind? There you go.)

And even when TOS stuff comes into play, it still relates to the main story, which is all original. So IMO at least, the TOS content hasn't and I don't think it will be overshadowing the VNG content.

Anybody with any passing knowledge of Trek lore can see why Carol Marcus is in the mix. For what it's worth, she was always part of the storyline; her inclusion goes all the way back to the original Vanguard series bible David Mack wrote in 2004, and she's there precisely for the reasons everybody is now seeing.

That's cool. I remember always trying to nail down exactly what the effects of the quantum olivium (is that what it was called?) in the New Earth books were in the stuff we knew of from the 24th century. I think it was implied to have something to do with replicators and holodecks. I have a feeling that there have been other TOS-era game-changing discoveries in books since TNG came out that probably would've been reflected in stuff we knew about in their future.

I thought it was interesting when it clicked exactly what the practical application of the meta-genome would be, and I'm glad (but not surprised, thanks to the kind of attention to detail I've grown accustomed to) that it was in place from the start, rather than the meta-genome being made as some vague technobabbly macguffin that everyone fights over but never really comes to anything.

I have a question...

Do the Errand of Vengeance/Fury books take place in the same continuity as Star Trek: Vanguard? And, if so, are any common events or characters mentioned in both series?

As I recall, Dayton did make sure that Vanguard: Precipice was consistent with the Errand of... books, though cross-references are minimal. I'm sure he can give a better answer than I can about the specifics.

While there are no overt ties between the two sets of books so far as plotlines are concerned, I did endeavor to keep consistent with the Errand of... books and Vanguard when I was writing Open Secrets. I made a reference or two to events from the books (the Klingon attack on Starbase 42, for example), but nothing which makes Eo_ required reading for Vanguard (or vice versa).

Sorry for posting twice in a row but I have another question:

Do the S.C.E. print compilations need to be read in order... or could one read, say, #4, #6, and #7 without having previously read the others?

Thanks.

You never need to read anything in order, but SCE is serialized just like most of the rest of Trek fiction these days, so you'll enjoy it more if you start at the beginning.
