Good God, Texas Has Done It

Textbooks in Texas will now feature bigotry, extreme nationalsim and bad religion over science. It is a sad day for America.

I'm trying to figure it out from the TEA page here.

So far they bigots insist on teaching about MLK, Cesar Chavez, Betty Friedan, and Rosa Parks.

You're being a bit extreme and reactionary

Overall, there are idiotic changes being made, ie Calling the US a Constitutional Republic rather than a Democratic-Republic. Either way, Republicans or Democrats push for their own political agenda.

Yeah, education swings left and right all the time in America, depending on whhat group has the control of the school boards. They were griping 15 years ago when the same type of school boards decidedly DOWNPLAYED American history in the classroom to talk more about the influences of other world cultures - which basically became a big bitch-session for anyone from a minor country with an axe to grind against America and the West.

There are actually SOME things I agree with re: the school board's decisions, some I also think are arbitrary, and some that are just flat-out stupid. Down-playing the slave trade, for instance, is just plain stupid.

Canada's chart of rights doesn't allow bigotry, racism or sexism in schools, work places, housing or anywhere if it harms someone. You can't be fired for being gay for example, you can't be discriminated against if you're a women applying for a more "manly job", and you can't be fired for anything except your actions in the work place - such as being rude, stealing or not doing your job.

I heard(from rumors) that the USA allows states/schools/jobs/etc to be bigots, racists and sexists and its perfectly legel, is it really true?

It's perfectly legal to be a bigot. It is not necessarily legal to express your bigotry in business transactions, or in a classroom, or various other situations, though.

We have freedoms in the U.S., and if you want to be a pathetic racist, a dumbass bigot -- you can do that -- as along as you infringe upon somebody else's rights.

You can be a sexist, too, but you walk a thin line of sexual harrassement. And if you don't hire someone based on their sex, there is a law right there for descrimination based on sex.

And on a side note, you can be all those nasty things -- even call people then (check out the batshit Left-wing TNZ posts), you have to deal with REGULAR Americans who will shun you. Not hire you, keep you out of circles of level headed people, even get your ass kicked (even though that's not necessarily the right thing).

I'm not familiar with Canada's laws very much -- they actually have laws telling you what you can & cannot be/do?

"Democratic Republic" usually refers to a communist or totalitarian state, like the German Democratic Republic, Korean People's Democratic Republic, Lao People's Democratic Republic, People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, all of which were communist. Perhaps not applying the term to the United States will help the students avoid confusion.

Lord knows we wouldn't want students to know the difference between a real democracy and a fake, communist 'democracy'.

Otherwise, they might not automatically associate anything "democratic" with communism.

And we wouldn't want that.

Heck no, we wouldn't!

It's important for kids to be able to understand that totalitarian police states (like North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, and East Germany) often adopt wonderful names for their socialist h311 holes. Other warning signs are names like Islamic Republic, Socialist Republic, and People's Republic. This is part of the Texas curriculum that Democrats are screaming about, along with teaching the principles of free market capitalism and not treating Ted Kennedy as a major historical figure (he wasn't).
