Gonna spend my rebate on a console system, suggestions??

So yes, my $600 tax rebate that I'll be getting back in a couple months, I'll put a bit toward the dwindling credit card debt that I have, not much left, only a couple hundred. But, the main thing that I'll be using the rebate for is a new console system.

For years i've wanted one, never had one when I was young, but now i've got a job, no more tests or school to worry about, and i freakin want a good game system. First, which system do you recommend? Of course I'm a big trek fan, so I'd like a system that I can play trek games on. I'm also a big fan of Ghost Recon and the NHL 2K series.

So the second question would be, what games, trek or otherwise, should i get for this new system?

Thank you for the help, I hope you gamers would know better than I.

There aren't many Trek games out there, I'm afraid. There's two recent Trek games available for the PS2 (Conquest and Encounters), while the Wii (Conquest) and 360 (Legacy) only have one title each. In the end, it's up to you. ;)

I just got my PS3 and it's great, I was a console hold-out for years, always doing PC gaming but I really urge you to go with the PS3.

If you're looking to the future, it's PS3 and BluRay all the way. XBox has a good catalog of old titles but there are some great games already for the PS3 and more coming, WITH true HD graphics. Check out the trailer for the new Indiana Jones GAME Lucasarts is working on for example.

Old fossil reporting here,

Personally I wouldn't focus to much on systems with ST games, in general the Star Trek releases have been pis poor compared with some of the releases back years ago.
Rather, focus on a system that simply has all the game genres you like and not just certain franchises.

In a way I am guilty of the last, I bought a Nintendo Wii just so I could play Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, but I am a major Metroid fan.

right now the 360 has the better games library, but the PS3 has a built in BluRay player . . .
the Wii's graphics aren't much better than Gamecube, but the wiimote is great fun to use

if you have an xbox or ps2 don't get rid of them if you get a 360 or ps3, since both the new consoles don't have full backwards compatibility to old games

If you want to play Trek games - get a PC machine - there are loads of decent ones second hand - you won't need a particularaly new one - a machine thats 1 or 2 years old will be able to play all the Trek PC games that are any good!

Heh heh, thinking about the old adventure games again I have been bringing up? ;)

As Daedalus5 said, if it's just Star Trek games that you're after, just go with a PC. What were the last good Trek games? The Armada and Elite Force games? I don't think that either of them ever came out on consoles.

If you really want to get a console, you're going to have to look past Trek and think about what other games you'll want to play. Do you like fighting or RPGs? PS3 might be the way you want to go. A big shooter fan? Might want to go with a 360, although 360 has really started pulling away from the whole "shooter" console thing. If you don't want to blow a lot of money and just get something that will be fun and really interactive, just go with a Wii.
