Goldsmith's Klingon Theme inspired by...

Doug Otte

Fleet Captain

...Ralph Vaughn Williams.

About a year ago on a local classical FM station, the DJ talked about Goldsmith's Klingon Theme (first heard in TMP) and how similar it was to the fast movement of a Ralph Vaughn Williams symphony. He played snippets of both back-to-back and the similarity was uncanny. I would say Goldsmith was paying homage to Vaughn Williams, and not outright copying.

I thought it was the 5th Symphony, but I finally got an SACD of same, and it's not the right one. Does anyone know which Vaughn Williams symphony it was?

BTW, I can't remember which DJ it was, otherwise I'd contact the station and ask him.

Thanks,
Doug

Thats interesting. I never heard of that before.

An aside: If you listen to Holst's "The Planets", in particular, Mars, you'd swear it was a Klingon theme.

Third movement of Vaughan Williams's Fourth Symphony.

WOW! Just listened to VW 4 as played by Paavo Berglund and Royal Phil. Killer! As good a performance by a brass section I can remember, including Chicago.

Definitely quoted by Goldsmith though different meter and mood, obviously.

What was bugging VW that day? Most pissed-sounding music I remember. Classical anyway.

Thanks for the clue-in to the music. A huge surprise as I sat here at my Mac on a Friday afternoon!

I found some of the music from TUC sounded REMARKABLY like Holst's Mars. I'm glad I'm not the only one hearing similarities. It's a shame the average listener doesn't get it.

The last few notes of that particular piece are actually virtually identical to Williams' Main Title/Blockade Runner music for Star Wars:ANH

And of course, Nick Meyer originally wanted to adapt Holst's "The Planets" for the TUC soundtrack. When that proved prohibitive, he had Cliff Eidelman write a very Holstian score for the film (especially the opening credits).

I thought the credits was influenced by Stravinsky's firebird. At least Meyer mentioned that at some point in the making of special.

John Williams absolutely channels Holst; and Prokofiev when writing his odd-sounding themes.

And your quote makes me feel the same way!

I do love Ralph Vaugh Williams, and for me, the most beautiful piece of music ever written is The Lark Ascending. It brings me to tears, no matter how many times i listen to it.
