Going Blu-Ray...maybe....

In the new year I'm seriously considering a couple of purchases. First is a new iMac. I don't need a new computer (my current eMac works fine), but I'd like one with a larger (21.5" vs. current 17") and nicer display and higher specs and other related stuff.

The second thing I'm considering is a Blu-Ray player. Here's the thing though: I currently have an upgrading Samsung DVD recorder that works quite nicely. Now straight forward Blu-Ray players have become reasonably priced in my estimation and since they are backwards compatible it wouldn't have to mean swapping out my previous DVDs. However, I would miss the recording function of my current DVD recorder. And Blu-Ray recorders are still rather pricey in my opinion.

Of course, since my current recorder is used only to record stuff on TV when I'm not home then I suppose I could still keep the recorder for that alongside a regular Blu-Ray player. At this point Blu-Ray is really only to enjoy movies.

Hmmm...

Walmart has a Magnavox Blu-ray player for $78. I have the same model.
It works flawlessly.

Thank you, but I hate Wal-Mart. However, I happen to work for Future Shop so I can take advantage of my staff purchase discount.

Part of me is also thinking that I should hold off going Blu-Ray until I absolutely have to. And presently Blu-Ray isn't dominating the market yet.

Hmm...

Originally, I was going to hold off on getting a Blu-Ray player until they put one out on the market with a record button.

Then I figured if I purchase any movies there are bound to be some I'd regret having on regular DVD when I'd have made the switch. So I finally decided to bite the bullet and picked up a Blu-Ray player last year.

Are you more interested in renting movies or purchasing them?

I got Star Trek on Blu-Ray for $19.99. Didn't have the player yet, but knew I wanted one.

The girlfriend let me put her Blu-Ray player in my room, as it has a decidedly sweet surround sound system.

As a result of these two events, I doubt I'll ever buy another standard DVD again.

I rent movies very rarely. If I really like a movie then I'll buy it for my collection. Before I moved here I occasionally caught movies on download through a friend--presently that looks kinda murky here because I haven't established any real social connections yet. Then again I got along fine before downloads.

These days I only go to the cinema usually for something with visual spectacle. Otherwise I've seen it on download or rented it, then if I really like it I'll buy my own copy. I've yet to purchase Up! and it may be the first movie I buy without having seen first because of the positive reviews (of critics I trust) and others whose tastes I'm familiar with. And that the film's creators are the same people who gave us The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Wall-E, all films I loved.

Warped9 you should really consider a Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player that has BD-Live.
Without that feature you are painting yourself into a corner with future VOD offerings.

I've thought about getting a Blu-Ray player, but my TV is 1080i, so I'm not sure if it'll be worth the investment.
