Goin' Rogue.

Just saw Rogue One. (Which is, just by-and-by, the only Star Wars movie I've seen since the Sale), and I gotta say, I enjoyed it. I'm not a huge Star Wars fan in general, but I did enjoy this one. First and foremost, they did a superb, and I do mean absolutely superb job of recreating the look of the first film (which was really the fourth film... oh whatever!!!!!) and in filling the gap. Indeed, I guess honestly, this one should be considered Episode IV, A New Hope V, Empire VI, etc..., but of course I guess there's no way to re-title the whole canon now.

I really enjoyed it too. A good story, with interesting characters, and some fun connection to ANH.

In every "Best Star Wars Movie" Poll I've ever seen, Empire is always in the lead, with New Hope being close behind and the rest all way back there, and I for the most part agree. I still remember hearing the "I am your father" line when I saw it in theatres, at the ripe old age of 8, and, at the time, being shocked to the core. I have not seen any of the new trilogy. If I just made some enemies, I'm sorry, but I've been reluctant for two reasons: for one, I've heard (and don't find it hard to believe) that it's not so much a new trilogy as it is a rehash of the original trilogy. And, secondly, I've just never liked Disney. While some of their movies are pretty good (Fantasia is definitely a classic), and Aladdin was fairly good), I thought their treatment of Kipling, Victor Hugo, and the Hercules legend was absolutely disgraceful.
Still, a lot of the guys I train with are really looking forward to the next one (Last Jedi), so maybe I'll give in and see it, depending on what you all recommend...

We've only gotten one movie so far in the new trilogy, so it's a bit early to be judging the whole thing.

Oh definitely the best movie since Empire. I said that right after I saw it and still feel that way. If these people were in charge of the prequels and episode 7, I'd probably like them better, too.

And my opinion is not influenced by the Death Star. It was just a much better story. Cohesive whole that fits with the original trilogy much better than rest.

Well, I think Clone Wars and Rebels are pretty good, too.

I think I’m the only one who believes Rogue One is overrated. It’s not a bad film, but it feels weighed down by lack of character development and far too much fan service. The action scenes are top notch. There are definitely some nice moments but I can’t hold it in the same regard as ESB or ANH.

I felt that RO was a bit more mature for a SW film. It's like Torchwood was the after 9pm show for Dr Who fans. RO is kind of a more like a grown ups SW film. And, I really enjoyed it because of that aspect.

I have to say I appreciated TPTB actually going all out and leaving none of Our Heroes alive at the end of the day, even though it's painful to watch because I like them. I think it's one of the few times I've seen a so-called suicide mission actually turn out to be so.

Not sure whether I should go as far as citing examples, so I'll just say it bugs me a bit when epic and perilous adventures, especially long-term ones, end with everyone who started the adventure still alive and well at the end.

I personally wish that more of the original trailer elements had been included, as it gave Jyn a bit of a rougher edge than some of what we see in the final cut. Also that TIE Fighter. :p

Yeah, they neutered Jyn a bit. I really do hope at some point we'll find out what the original intent was. And that TIE Fighter indeed!

It's kind of frustrating to have cool stuff in a trailer that's not intended to be in the movie at all, especially with a project on the level of Star Wars. If you film stuff and it later gets reshot or altered, that's more forgivable. As an example, the original Thor: Ragnarok trailer has a few shots with Hera in New York, because originally that would have been the location for those scenes. But I suppose for me it's a tad jarring, because I like R1 trailers and I like the other recent ones as well. But it's different from, say, the TFA trailer which is pretty finalized and presumably the same is true with the LJ trailers.

I don't mind if you do a little editing for marketing purposes, like changing the order of dialogue or scenes and such. That's fine if it makes the trailer cooler and more appealing, and it takes a bit of skill. ;) But that's different from putting something potentially awesome in the trailer to not actually use it. I also felt like the lost trailer elements added some good bits to the relationship between Jyn and K-2SO, which I consider one of the movie's strong points.

Rogue One is definitely my favorite out of all SW films. Although that scene with the "por-gullet" really freaked me out.

I too really loved Rogue One! It dared to try something else, to not be about the Skywalkers and Force-users and lightsabers. There are so many stories to tell in this universe. Like with TLJ, I appreciated them for going a different route here. Visually, it was stunning.

And yes, the characters weren't very developed. But to me, this isn't a character movie. It's an event movie, like those war movies from the 60's and 70's. So watching it like that makes a big difference in the way I enjoyed this movie.
