Godzilla, Kong, Gamera & Co.: The Kaiju Mega-Thread

Liked the first two episodes. Human drama that is actually interesting has not been the MonsterVerse's strength in the past, but it certainly delivers here. A lot of that can probably be attributed to Matt Fraction.

Some of the names I noticed, Mariko Tanaka is credited as staff writer. She was probably recruited by fellow comics scribe Fraction, and actually being a Japanese-American woman sharing this with two main characters (okay, Hiroshi was American by marriage, but still) probably helped in how these would be depicted.
The voice of Cate's mom on the phone was Tamlyn Tomita. Wonder if we'll get to see her face on the show, too.
Yoshimitsu Banno is still getting producer credit on MonsterVerse installments, even six years after his death. It's nice, as the 2014 Godzilla (and thus, the MonsterVerse) wouldn't have happened without him and his efforts.

Wild that the guy who was pretty much blacklisted from Godzilla-dom after directing the trippy Godzilla vs. Hedorah ended up making such a comeback decades later.

I'm curious how long it will be before we pick back up with Bill, Lee, and Keiko in '54?
I'm assuming Keiko must have survived since Cate and Kentaro's dad wasn't born yet, judging from the conversation in the car.

Just finished episode 3. The Monarch story is making more sense now with them being a rogue faction that is after them. I did it rather odd they were making them the baddies when we know from the movies they’re anything but.

Oh shit, I didn't realize episode 3 was out. Weren't the first 2 episode released last Friday?

So we just saw episode 1... the way i heard it, Wyatt Russell's character compliments the 2 on raising a great kid (among other accompishments). So he's already born.

But kinda confused why they decided to cast a full white guy as the husband. And i am assuming he will die soon- so Cate and Kentaro's dad will wind up growing up in Japan.

Pretty good start- with a while lotta timeline jumping.

That full white guy is the character John Goodman played in Kong: Skull Island, so he doesn't die until the end of the Vietnam War.

No the husband who went with her to the alleged radioactive site and he dropped his wife trying to pull her up from the hatchlings

I know John Goodman was at the beginning of the episode and threw the waterproof bag that was eventually recovered.

The guy who dropped his wife is a younger version of Bill Randa, John Goodman's character in Skull Island.
Episode 3 was pretty good.
I liked the South Korean guy who helped them out, and I'm disappointed he didn't survive the episode.
The reveal that Tim went after Cate, Kentaro and May without permission was surprise. I missed if they explained why he was so determined to get the files that he'd go off book like that.
I remember there was some stuff about the Bikini Atoll nuclear test in the first Monsterverse Godzilla, so it was kinda cool to get to see that whole story.
That monster at the end was pretty cool.

Oh, I could have sworn he said they were going to have a great kid, future tense. And the age thing seems kind of off with him too, since Takehiro Hira, the actor is only 49 and Hiroshi, the character, would be at least in his '60 in 2015 if he was born before 1954. But they did already kind of lampshade the age thing with Kurt Russell playing Lee this week, so there could be something coming up that explains it.

They are the same character, Bill Randa. Anders Holm plays younger Bill Randa in the 1950s, John Goodman is the older Bill Randa in the 1970s.

I decided to drop by the library and pick up the DVD of Kong: Skull Island so I could rewatch it before subscribing to Apple+ to see Monarch. I went to the DVD shelves and found they had all the MonsterVerse Godzilla movies lined up in the sci-fi section... but no Kong. I had to search through all the different sections searching for "K" spines until I found K:SI in the action section. In retrospect, I really should've mentioned to the librarians that they ought to go together, but I was in a hurry.

I considered picking up the Godzilla films too, or at least the 2014 one, but I decided K:SI was the only one I felt a strong desire to rewatch.

There are no other streaming services with Monarch Legacy of Monsters except for Apple TV, right?

Yes, it's exclusive to Apple TV+.
So we're back to Friday for this week's episode?
