Caught this on a heavy rain day with time to burn.
It's fun. Reminds me of the old Godzilla movies I grew up watching. If I was a kid I would love the hell out of this.
I would have preferred a more serious take although I really disliked the 2014 snore fest.
Not a great movie but I didn't feel like it was a waste of time to watch. Unlike 'Venom' or 'The Predator'.

By the way, did Godzilla step on Gareth Edwards? Where the hell is this guy?

Godzilla: King of the Monsters
The third movie in Legendary's 'Monsterverse'. Five years after the MUTO attack on San Francisco, a new crisis arises. While studying a newly hatched 'Titan', a Monarch scientist and her daughter are abducted by ecoterrorists. But there is certainly more to this than that. Then her estranged husband is brought into the situation by Monarch. This set-up is certainly interesting. It certainly adds additional human conflict to the story. But there is more. Monarch vs. the United States Military. See Below.
Of course, one doesn't go to a movie about kaiju just because of the human characters. The kaiju themselves and their battles are the main drawcard. There is certainly more of Godzilla than in the 2014 film. And a lot is also seen of Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah. That Godzilla helps to keep the kaiju ecosystem in check was established in the 2014 film, but this aspect of kaiju interactions is expanded upon. Ghidorah being an alien interloper, that sends the system out of balance is definitely an interesting development.
Of course these two very different elements cause problems. Mainly in the editing. Scenes keep switching from the kaiju fighting, back to what the people are doing. Often many times in a minute, or less. Focus on one thing! I would say. But this is a minor quibble. But more on those below. The story is mainly about conflict. Conflict between the human characters (especially when it comes to the Russells and their struggles), conflict between the kaiju (of course), and the conflicts between humans and kaiju.
The plot of Monarch and their struggle against the ecoterrorists (while searching for Emma and Madison) was interesting. It shows how grief (for their son, Andrew, who was killed in the San Francisco incident) can send people down dark paths, to make decisions they otherwise wouldn't make. In this case to cooperate with a terrorist group to bring about apocalyptic conditions. Most of the Monarch characters as they struggle to deal with the 'Titans' getting loose, were depicted well, especially Dr. Serizawa, but more on that below.
But the main stars are the kaiju, especially Godzilla. But also Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah. (Other kaiju are seen, but aren't the focus. Godzilla going into action to protect Earth (or rather the biosphere) against threats, is an interesting scenario, and the way this was depicted was good. Mothra is slowly developed through the film, from her birth at he beginning, through to her helping Godzilla against King Ghidorah in Boston (more on that below). Rodan emerging from the volcano and going to fight against Ghidorah was a good scene (albiet with the above caveats).
The reveal of Ghidorah in Antarctica was good also. However what Monarch, the ecoterrorists or individual humans do, have an impact on the outcome. Dr. Serizawa sacrificing himself to recharge Godzilla is something I was uncertain of, but the storyline works (as it is reflected by Mothra doing the same later). The concept of the ORCA is interesting, but is mainly a (literal) plot device to get the kaiju to do what the humans want them to do. But Madison running off with it to the stadium was an important contributor to the final sequence.
Overall the film was as much of a mess as Boston was at the end of the climatic fight, but still rather enjoyable. 8.2/10.

I just saw this on DVD. Its a movie full of monster fights that would be good if you could see them and human characters that are absolutely the worst in the entire Godzilla franchise that I've seen (and I've seen a bunch of Godzilla films, from every era). This film is barely worth seeing, I'd say that watching the fight clips by themselves would be a much more entertaining experience. Before this my most disliked Godzilla movie was Godzilla Raids Again (the first sequel to the original movie), but this has even more boring humans and a less tolerable story. The villain motivation is just a bad anime villain's motivation, and the actual characters are as bad if not worse then Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in the 2014 Godzilla. I did not, for a single second, give a shit about Crazy Mom, Stranger Things Girl or Generic Character Dad. Ken Watanabe was fine, but he couldn't carry the entire human section of the film by himself.

The CG was fine in theory, but everything takes place in the dark/at night and/or during storms so the fights themselves are barely visible, and so are not very satisfying. Also, Mothra looks like shit, and I say that as someone who considers Mothra probably their favorite Godzilla franchise kaiju (pretty much tied with Godzilla himself). That wouldn't have mattered as much if the movie was more clear visually, but as it is its one more annoyance. In the end, Shin Godzilla is far superior visually even with a lot less budget (and of course its much better written and has better characters).

Overall, this is the worst Godzilla movie I've seen. I'd even take the goofy, almost nonviolent 70s Godzilla stuff over this, since at least I can laugh at stuff like Godzilla's flying drop kick and Jet Jaguar. The 2014 Godzilla movie is definitely still the best US made Godzilla movie, since at least the plot was ok and, even if he was only on screen for about 5 minutes, I could at least see the action Godzilla took part in for those 5 minutes (although its a very average movie at best overall).

D / Below Average

Other than the very heavy handed climate change story line I really enjoyed this. It reminded me of Saturday afternoons watching "Creature Double Feature" on channel 56 in Boston.

Boston and Fenway Park being featured in the movie was fun too.

Saw the movie this morning, and I enjoyed it. I can't really remember the 2014 movie well enough to judge based on it, but I did enjoy Skull Island more than this.
I thought the human story was pretty good, not amazing, but I enjoyed it enough that I didn't mind when we were focusing on them rather than the Titans. If nothing I else, I at least like the characters enough that I actually wanted to see them survive their encounters with the Titans. I did not expect the big twist with Vera Fermiga's Emma, so that was a nice little complication to the story.
I was really disappointed they killed off Serizawa, he was one of my favorite characters, and I was kind of hoping he'd be the Nick Fury of the modern Monsterverse movies.
The one really standout part of the movie was the visuals, there were some absolutely gorgeous scenes.
I would have been happier with a bit more monster action, but what we did get was awesome, some of the best I've seen in a movie like this.
I voted A- in the poll.
Just watched this on HBOMax this morning, which is the first time I've seen it since I saw in the theater. I looked back at my old review, and I pretty much feel the same way as I did before.
One thing thing I didn't mention before, but I do kind of wish they had focused a bit more on the monster fights when they were fighting.

I didn't realize until after that post the the pre-COVID release date for Godzilla vs Kong was Friday. It's a little creepy that by pure coincidence I just happened to watch King of the Monsters a day after it's sequel was supposed to come out.
I had forgotten about the post-credit scene, it will be interesting to see if we eventually get some kind of follow on it. Charles Dance isn't in GvK, so if we do, it probably won't be there.

Godzilla vs. Kong is a movie I generally forget is even happening at this point. I'm not super excited because I loathed king of the monsters and didn't like Kong Skull Island very much. I don't even know if it was filmed yet. If it was filmed at expected to come out in a year or two, if it wasn't filmed I'm wondering if it would even get made at this point.

It's Kirk, the more most of us like something, the more he hates it.

That is fucking bullshit and you know it. I love a huge amount of things, I don't have to fucking justify when I don't like something by constantly posting lists of stuff I love. I could list dozens of things, from the MCU to the Mandalorian to various video games and dozens of other things that I really enjoy, and that's just stuff that's currently relevant. Hell, I'm even one of the five people who enjoyed rise of Skywalker, and the sequel films overall, but the people who claim I hate everything never seem to bring that up

I didn't like king of the monsters for many reasons. For example, I hated stranger things girls character and felt she was just shoehorned in because she's popular, they never should have had a kid character be the focus in the movie. I also hated how almost every monster scene takes place where you can't see it, it's all in the dark or in a Storm or in a smoke cloud and it's bullshit done to supposedly make the CG look better for less money by hiding it and . At least the two minutes of Godzilla we got in the 2014 movie you could actually see what was going on. Then there was stuff like mothra's design being terrible, the movie having a freaking human villain whose goals made no sense and who had no reason to be in the movie.

So yeah, I found this to be the absolute worst Godzilla movie I've seen, and I've seen a bunch of them at this point. I'll take the goofy 70 shit over the u.s. stuff, which is just either too cheap or too embarrassed by the source material to actually have the monsters visibly on screen and focuses on stupid human plots instead.

Bad writing, characters and CG/effects I don't find acceptable are the basic reasons I don't like the movie, not some bullshit "I hate everything" excuse that some people bitter I don't mindlessly praise some things they do like to spout
