Is there a software that can be used to recreate alien planets with spheres?

For what? In 2D you should check out the Photoshop plugins from Flaming Pear, particularly the Lunar Cell plugin which lets you create entire planets with realistic surface details to suit your tastes. It's fantastic, and some of their other plugins are amazing as well. You can create entire fantastic starfields and close-ups of stars and nebulas to your hearts content, all randomly generated each time. Excellent stuff.

In 3D, it depends what package you use. I've used a planet surface created in Flaming Pear and pasted it to a backing board in Lightwave and used it for an animation.
