Global warming causes trouble in Siberia

The big mystery now is how the dinosaurs kept from freezing to death before humans came along,
You know that's not even funny, because global warming is literally caused by humans bringing the dinosaurs back from the oil wells into the atmosphere.

Just the other day I read something that said global warming is on vacation for a few years, or something like that.

I mean, really. You half-remember the argument of something you half-read the other day so problem solved and pay no mind to all those people who actually scientifically study the climate for a living? That's compelling stuff.

What you are probably half-remembering is this Washington Times screed. This was from a period when a small group of right-wing media outlets went wild when a climate scientist said that surface temperatures had been stable for a short number of years, as if this could be spun as his admitting that the whole notion of human-caused climate change was false. Of course, his statement meant absolutely no such thing; this gambit, like most denialism, was basically not very much smarter than "it's a-snowin' out, so much fer global warmin'!"

It's good to keep things in perspective, but perspective still has to be honest and account for realities, including the uncomfortable ones. Get used to these uncomfortable ones. They aren't going anywhere.

I'm really amazed that knowing that 97% of all climate scientists agree that humans are the cause doesn't give them a moment to pause and think about it before acting like it's a scam. It's absolutely stunning to me. They're the people who understand it better than anyone else and it's almost universal agreement. Even counting the 3%, I think some of them disagree about how much humans contribute to it versus it being a natural cycle. Not that it isn't happening at all.

But they would rather listen to people who don't know what they're even talking about and not the experts. Do they take their car to a dentist if it breaks down instead of a mechanic? It's just willful ignorance, probably due to buying into some political ideology that would rather stick their fingers in their eyes and ignore the problem because they're getting paid off by oil companies who have a vested interest. I find it funny that they even try to claim the same is going for climate scientists when the oil industry is the most profitable business in human history. It's like comparing a company running off Kickstarter to Apple.

It would be laughable if not for what climate change is going to cost us as time goes on and it gets worse. I wonder how long they'll deny it before admitting they were wrong because it's already too late to stop it. Does the sea have to be up to their ankles before the thought enters their heads?

^But I thout a US Senator had proven that climate change wasn't happening because he brought a snowball into the chamber. ;) No offense to our American cousins but that's just embarrassing.

That's Sen. Jim Inhofe who coincidentally received nearly two million dollars in donations from coal and oil industry since 1999 and is sadly chairing the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.

I don't know if he's really an idiot or just paid to be one.

I'm really amazed that knowing that 97% of all climate scientists agree that humans are the cause doesn't give them a moment to pause and think about it before acting like it's a scam.
The implication that there is one single cause of climate change certainly should make one pause to think.

And there might be several causes of climate change, human activey might be the sole cause or just a contrbuting factor but it is one cause we can directly influence

No, we're just contributing to it more than anything else. So while it may not be the cause, we are the main cause. Is that clear enough for you? Scientists do research on this and have looked at other possible factors like the sun and other natural causes. But those have been ruled out. What they have found is that gases that weren't present in high amounts until the Industrial Revolution have lead to the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Maybe you should actually think for yourself and read scientific research instead of mining posts for a single word and play semantics so you can try and fail to appear to be an open minded skeptic critical of a dogmatic belief. But that might cause you to change your mind and you're dead set against that happening. It's no better than the people who doubt vaccines, evolution or the Holocaust.

I know you'll ignore this, but NASA has this site that even you should be able to understand. Maybe you should read over it and read where they back it up with evidence. Because the scientists actually have evidence, you do not.

Maybe you should actually think for yourself and read scientific research... But that might cause you to change your mind and you're dead set against that happening.
In what way should I change my mind? I already believe mankind has the capacity to affect climate just as we have the capacity to affect landscapes and biodiversity.

In that case, how does that belief affect your personal actions, and your opinion as to how mankind should address the problem?

That's a question we could all ask ourselves, JM. How has it affected your personal actions?
Do you drive an electric car? A hybrid at least? A small car with insane mpg?
Do you use public transport as often as possible?
Do you refuse to have air conditioning because it wastes so much energy?

Then why would you act like you didn't unless you just want to play pretend or troll a science forum by denying science?

I assume the question is rhetorical, but for the sake of fairness:
I have only one car, and it is very fuel efficient. We use very little energy in our home (no AC in Florida is not a real option but we are super conscious of energy consumption) and although there is no effective public transportation in my area, we do try to curtail our trips.
We also minimize our meat consumption, use cloth diapers for the kids, etc.

Humans are human. Prone to mistakes. Just because 97% of people said that the earth was flat didn't make it so. There's evidence that a lot of the "science" surrounding man-caused climate change was faked. It's not a ton of evidence, but it's there.

I'm of the opinion that it doesn't matter how much money you throw down a hole, it's still a hole. Just saying "but we have to do something" doesn't mean that anything we do will make any difference. It's the epitome of humanity's hubris to think that we can change the climate of a planet (or, as some say, alter its orbit around the sun) just because we're here and using the resources that we find.

If people are so worried about our effect on the planet, they should throw away their technology and live off the land. No iPhones, no internet, no petroleum. Set the example, and maybe others will follow.

Instead of blasting people on a Star Trek forum, how about trying to persuade China to not pollute so much? Oh, but that's hard.

Big Jake, get a sense of humor for crying out loud. I just pointed out the existence of the article without trying to get all goony about it. Pull your thing out of your thing and laugh or something.

We all live together on this rock. It's pretty sweet. How about we not bitch at each other and get along?

That's cute. Let's ignore science and just get along. Maybe if we all sing Kumbaya together the planet will fix itself.

I take it you didn't pay attention to the scientific method in school and how it is supposed to weed out bias and bad information.

Humans are human. Prone to mistakes. Just because 97% of people said that the earth was flat didn't make it so.

So you're comparing today's scientific process and academic consensus to religiously motivated views on the world from several hundred years ago.

Grats on providing a great false equivalence.

There's evidence that a lot of the "science" surrounding man-caused climate change was faked.

No.

It's not a ton of evidence, but it's there.

So "a lot of research is fake" because you personally think there's "a little evidence".
Research has flaws at times. That's why stuff is peer-reviewed, you know? That's how Academia works.
And after all this peer-reviewing and discussing the academic consensus is still that there is man-made climate change.

Grats on not understanding how science works. Or academia.

I'm of the opinion that it doesn't matter how much money you throw down a hole, it's still a hole. Just saying "but we have to do something" doesn't mean that anything we do will make any difference.

There are measures that would clearly and easily improve things. Using much less fossil fuel is one of those.

Grats on writing ridiculously defeatist nonsense.

It's the epitome of humanity's hubris to think that we can change the climate of a planet (or, as some say, alter its orbit around the sun) just because we're here and using the resources that we find.

No.
If you can't see that we've massively changed a lot of things about our planet then I don't know what to tell you. Look at the rain forest, look at species diversity, look at the ozone layer.

Grats on writing uninformed bullshit.

If people are so worried about our effect on the planet, they should throw away their technology and live off the land. No iPhones, no internet, no petroleum. Set the example, and maybe others will follow.

Yes, changing things around now will be very costly because we didn't bother starting several decades ago. That doesn't mean we need to go back to the stone age.

Grats on exaggerating for effect.

Instead of blasting people on a Star Trek forum, how about trying to persuade China to not pollute so much? Oh, but that's hard.

China is pushing renewable energies because the pollution is too much of an issue. But obviously getting China to change things is even harder when it's the fucking US of A that keeps refusing to sign every new agreement if there's binding rules in it.

Grats on trying to blame others.

We all live together on this rock. It's pretty sweet. How about we not bitch at each other and get along?

Stop making these incredibly ignorant posts and the reactions will turn out to be much more constructive.

If 97% of climate scientists are wrong, I'd actually like to see peer-reviewed research to support the claim. I'll help you get published and then fly you to accept your Nobel Prize.

Not much to add to the above already-excellent replies to urbandefault, so I'll just say:

Big Jake, get a sense of humor for crying out loud. I just pointed out the existence of the article without trying to get all goony about it.

And I just pointed out that you were being misled by propaganda. Which needn't send you into a tailspin. You're one of those humans who is prone to mistakes, and you just made one. Deal. It's not, so to speak, the end of the world.

We all live together on this rock. It's pretty sweet. How about we not bitch at each other and get along?

You'll find it easier to get along with people who are on a Science and Technology forum in a thread about discussing climate change if you actually, you know, learn something about the topic instead of wandering in to spout empty platitudes. Why not try it out? Who knows but you might even find it more fun than your current method.

It's much easier to get along with people if they accept objective reality supported by facts and not a fantasy world that supports their delusional beliefs. Then we can figure out the correct action to take and address a very real problem that affects all of us today and future generations.

Yep.

Another thing I keep wondering about when it comes to climate change denialism: suppose it is all a fraud. Or suppose it's not a fraud, but a massive volcanic eruption comes along and counteracts anthropogenic climate change in time, effectively saving our butts. Or assume the planet manages to adapt to climate change - I mean, it has many times over in the past (just losing the occasional species in the mix). Whatever, let's assume we're not at all concerned about the climate, for the sake of argument.

Shouldn't we *still* be weaning ourselves from the finite resource that is fossil fuel? We don't know exactly when, but that shit's gonna run out. Don't we, as a species, want to have the means to sustain our way of life beyond that?
