Global internet cable map

Sometimes I like to imagine, when I'm visiting a website hosted in another country, that the information is speeding along the ocean floor to and from it's destination, that as I read the text, the information has pass through the darkest depths, where few have explored.

Great. Another thread about ponies. Just what this board needs.

Every thread needs ponies.

Ponies aside, I do find this quite interesting. Don't ask me why; I have no idea.

One cable gives me pause and makes me wonder about its purpose. The Svalbard Undersea Cable System is a 5 Tbps link that goes from Norway up to an island that could only be inhabited by Santa Clause and that's it. Why in the world is there a link of that size (the largest link on the map is about 7 Tbps) going from civilization to a barren snow-covered island with a population of less than 3000 (according to Wikipedia)? Hmm...perhaps there's more to Svalbard than meets the eye.

^ There are tons of research facilities on Svalbard, including major universities, foreign governments, and NASA, among others. Plus there's also that global seed vault up there, so I suspect it's for all the science and technology work that goes on there.

ETA: Yeah, here's a Wiki page on the cable: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svalbard_Undersea_Cable_System. Used by NASA, the DoD, the ESA, and others.

Well, duh, anything less and Santa Clause's emails wouldn't get through in the weeks leading up to Christmas! Dummy.
