I don't mind rip-offs too much, there is no such thing as an original story. The best a writer can do is to combine pre-existing story elements in new and interesting ways.
Exactamundo!

I do strongly disagree that BSG was a rip off of Star Wars though. This has been heavily documented and even went to court, and it is clear Larson's idea of Galactica pre-dates SW ( it was originally called Adam's Ark).
I suspect the Viper/Raider dogfights would not have happened the way they did without the influence of Star Wars. Nothing before Star Wars really did that in the space realm (at least outside of anime like Yamato).
I voted BSG 1st. Don't get me wrong, I love the new BSG but the original was child's play by comparison. The original was a poor man's SW/ TOW, the new version is up there with the Sopranos and The Wire.
Buck Rogers was fun but was also a poor man's SW or Flash Gordon. The first series holds up well but the 2nd is dire.
The problem is most or all of GAL's shows are total rip-offs of other shows. BSG and Buck copied SW. Automan copied Tron. Smith & Jones xeroxed Butch & Sundance. Knight Rider was Blue Thunder with a car instead of a helicopter. If you enjoy the GAL shows with their limitations, don't expect them to be deep or meaningful, fair enough, but their lasting appeal and univeral themes were worthy of acknowledgement.
The pedant in me wants to point out that Knight Rider came out before Blue Thunder.
Did Kor ever guest-star on nuBSG? Should've played nuBSG's Baltar's pops![]()

John Colicos died in 2000, three years before the miniseries aired.

Court rulings aren't good enough for some people.
When you get down to it, Star Wars itself was a rip-off, too, as was Indiana Jones and countless other well-loved films and t.v. shows.
Quincy, FTW.
I do have a soft spot for BSG, Buck Rogers, and Knight Rider too, though.

Quincy is good example how television has changed. Same basic ideals as CSI but without the blood n cuts - which couldn't be shown in the 70s (and when it comes down to it - I think Quincy is the much better of the two).
Some artists create an homage to the original, some take great lengths to distinguish new from old, and some really do simply steal, not much different than ripping the credits from an original work and slapping their own name on it. Lucas and Spielberg fall into that first category: they were legitimately inspired by and care for the original material and wanted to (in their own very different ways) pay tribute to those old works by making something of their own in the same vein.
Larson stole some, created some, paid tribute to some. He even recycled his own ideas once he ran out of ways to recycle others. Once you're making shit like Highwayman and Team Knight Rider, it's pretty obvious your career is nearing the end of it's potential.

All you are doing is conveying your prejudice for "artists" like Lucas and Speilberg and against Larson. One man's work of art is another's piece of trash.
