Glee creator blasts Slash, Kings of Leon for snubbing show

Glee creator Ryan Murphy has two choice words for one of the bands that has kept their music off the Fox hit — and they aren’t “Forget You.”

“F— you, Kings of Leon,” Murphy says, recalling how the Grammy-winning rockers denied Glee‘s request to cover “Use Somebody.”

“They’re self-centered a–holes, and they missed the big picture,” Murphy continues, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter. “They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument…. You can make fun of Glee all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music.”

Murphy also took Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash to task for comments he made in a recent interview. “Glee is worse than Grease and Grease is bad enough,” Slash told EW. “Actually, I look at Grease now and think: Between High School Musical and Glee, Grease was a brilliant work of art.”

Murphy’s take: “Usually I find that people who make those comments, their careers are over; they’re uneducated and quite stupid.”

Jeez, what is it with this guy? He needs to realize that a lot of bands/singers won't want their music on his show for a variety of reasons. Not everyone likes Glee. Nor will they. I can see the guy being a little upset but this is kind of harsh...calling people stupid, a--holes and not caring about kids being into music because they don't want to allow use of their songs?

I do not blame those folks, or anyone else, who doesn't want to see their work sanitized and watered down for a TV show.

I don't overly know much about the show, froms the looks of I'd rather not too. I did hear their version of Journey's Don't Stop Believing though...

... if I were a musician I too wouldn't want my songs anywhere near that show!

Why? Just, Why?

Here's an Idea for Ryan Murphy. Instead of blasting artists who don't want to use their music on the show, how about making a better show than you have lately. As a fan of Glee, it's been a struggle this season because the show isn't as good as it was in the first season. How about stop making Kurt such a pansy little bitch (He get's everything, people love him and support him, and he pushes them away), or actaully tell Lea Michelle her new look sucks and she should go back to the old look, or actually have some better writing. There was no need to come out with this 2 months after the initial response.

Well this explains Glee is so childish, the creator is a childish loser. Jesus Fucking Christ is he a baby!

The one that REALLY pissed me off was the Rocky Horror Picture show one.

RURRRRRR!!!!

This guy's statement makes me hate glee even more

They’re self-centered a–holes, and they missed the big picture

Oh am sorry if they don't want to help you make tons and tons of $$$. Glee is CRAP

Oh, that was a really bad idea. I can understand being frustrated, but when you're the show's creator/executive producer, you're relying on artists to give you the OK to use their work in your show.

When other artists hear that this person is difficult to work with (and downright rude, apparently), what incentive do they have to say yes?

Sure, lots of artists have said yes so far, but that "no" group could grow significantly after this.

KOL's rather reasonable response:

Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill has since responded to the rant, insisting the Glee war has spiralled out of control.

He says, "This whole Glee thing is a shock to us. It's gotten out of hand. At the time of the request, we hadn't even seen the show. It came at the end of that record cycle, and we were over promoting (the song Use Somebody).

"This was never meant as a slap in the face to Glee or to music education or to fans of the show. We're not sure where the anger is coming from. We just said no to a licence for a TV show, which we do a lot."

Glee dude definitely sounds childish and whiny. Your show is massively successful. Get over it.

As if it's not bad enough that his show is offensively horrible, the guy's an asshole too. Sounds about right.

I've never watched a complete episode of "Glee." My wife and one daughter love it.

As far as the music goes, I thought that, early on, the show did some nice work with music when they'd take a song and actually do something different with it. Their version of "Dont Stop Believing" was a fun reinterpretation, what the with a cappella opening. And Lea Michelle can sing.

Lately, however, from what I've seen, a lot of the music is just really skilled karaoke. The kids (and faculty) just remake pop songs either by doing nearly note for note remakes (a lot of the Britney Spears stuff) or just sanitizing it (most of the Rocky Horror songs).

Like I said, I think there are some talented vocalists on the show (esp. Michelle) but I think Slash makes a good point. Really, the show is just a modern twist on the movie "Grease."
