Glee creator blasts Slash, Kings of Leon for snubbing show

The worst part is that kids are growing up with the impression that the songs on Glee are better than the originals.. My 13 year old daughter already thinks that about a bunch of songs she's heard on the show..

Sadly, I enjoyed the show during its initial first few episodes, but quickly grew tired of it...

I'd be very surprised if most of the young fans of Glee have even heard the original versions of songs, even after Glee performed them.

I'd be very surprised if most of the young fans of Glee have even heard the original versions of songs, even after Glee performed them.

Back in the 80s, when I was just a young thing from a small town, still in the single digits, I heard this singer named Tiffany on the radio. I heard songs such as "I Saw Him Standing There" and thought it was awesome. If I had even heard of the Beatles at that point, it would have been in passing. As far as I was concerned, it was a pop song by Tiffany.

Later, when I discovered the radio dial switched to other stations, I discovered the originals ... I had no idea that almost everything they played on whatever station it was, were remakes from the 50s and 60s.

In my teenage years, my musical collection expanded quite a bit, for which I'm thankful now.

I'm guessing it will probably be the same for kids now. They hear these songs on Glee (or youtube or whatever) and play them endlessly. At some point, they will either seek out or somehow stumble upon the original, and take it from there. It's exposing them to music they may not have known they liked.

There are some quite tremendous actors and singers on Glee.

I'll take your word on the acting, but what I've heard of the songs were so heavy on the Auto-Tune I have to wonder about the singing talent. It sounds like a chorus of androids.

If that's the message they want to pass to kids, "turning them on" to music by singing through a computer, I'm not impressed.

Almost all music is autotuned nowadays. Go look up some of the bands like Train singing live and you'll want to throw up.

I hope Glee is having people check out the original stuff but there was one time where it seemed like the fans of the original song was angry that more people who watched Glee came to check out the original song. I'm talking mainly about Cee Lo Green's F*** You, which I thought was one of the better songs done on the show this season. I'm a little confused by this mentality. I mean the original song isn't going to change in any way, yet they have this possessiveness where if it's done by Glee it will make the original song "bad?" I would think getting more people to enjoy an original song that was covered by Glee would be a good thing but I guess not.

This is the case with the more dedicated music fans, but Glee's demographic are primarily pop fans. Pop fans are usually not as inclined to search out new music that isn't put on a plate in front of them, and not so tolerant of older music.
I don't think the average music fan my age and younger nowadays has the attention span or musical interest that people of your generation did. It's a different time. Less kids listen to radio, and less radio stations (at least here) will deviate from the mainstream stuff.
It's easier than ever to find new music with the internet, so people should be exploring a lot more music, but in my experience a lot aren't interested in doing so. Maybe I'm a bit cynical though.

Seemed more like a comment on Murphy's bitchiness than his sexual preference. I can't imagine the drummer would know or care about it, or he'd hopefully have been more careful about it.

He's just coming off as a child having a tantrum over not getting what he wanted if you ask me.

I agree. Pretty much every band or artist has done covers anyway. I don't see what's so bad about Glee doing them, especially because they usually try to use it in a new context.

A good example is I Want to Hold Your Hand, a simple poppy love song. But when Kurt sang it about his father who just had a heart attack the song took on a whole new meaning.

I think people just need to chill out sometimes, Ryan Murphy included.

article

Glee creator Ryan Murphy has two choice words for one of the bands that has kept their music off the Fox hit — and they aren’t “Forget You.”

“F— you, Kings of Leon,” Murphy says, recalling how the Grammy-winning rockers denied Glee‘s request to cover “Use Somebody.”

“They’re self-centered a–holes, and they missed the big picture,” Murphy continues, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter. “They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument…. You can make fun of Glee all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music.”
Murphy also took Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash to task for comments he made in a recent interview. “Glee is worse than Grease and Grease is bad enough,” Slash told EW. “Actually, I look at Grease now and think: Between High School Musical and Glee, Grease was a brilliant work of art.”

Murphy’s take: “Usually I find that people who make those comments, their careers are over; they’re uneducated and quite stupid.”
Jeez, what is it with this guy? He needs to realize that a lot of bands/singers won't want their music on his show for a variety of reasons. Not everyone likes Glee. Nor will they. I can see the guy being a little upset but this is kind of harsh...calling people stupid, a--holes and not caring about kids being into music because they don't want to allow use of their songs?

Stupid response to a well-thought out statement by a band that doesn't want their music cheapened by the MSM. They have a right not to want to be that way, and they said so; time for Mr. Murphy to put up or shut up.

Slash has more talent in his little finger than the entire cast and crew of Glee.
There is a different Slash than the one from Guns and Roses?

I do like his stuff in GnR, but he's such a predictable guitarist these days, very fluid but tremendously boring too. He doesn't stretch himself at all. Also I have had the horrible experience of watching him fumble his way through Stone Temple Pilots songs, it really highlighted how uncreative his own style is and how incapable he is of playing out of it.
He's no Frank Zappa that's for sure.

As far as Glee goes, I can't fault anyone for not wanting their songs to be given the sugary pop treatment, they probably don't have to be such dicks about it either though. And I somewhat agree with the creator's comments that it inspires young kids to take a greater interest in music. At least they don't just cover whatever is at number 1 this week.
It should be viewed as a complement, especially since it also probably comes with a nice check.

The Radio Disney creation DEVO 2.0 is a great example of horrible sugary remixes of songs that the original band is more than happy to cash in on.

After reading about that latest exchange, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Followill was playing right into Murphy's hands so to speak. :vulcan:
