Given what we've seen so far...

Given what happened to Mara Jade later on, no.

I was as angry as the next guy at what I assume you are talking about...but....at least she existed. At least she and Luke had what they did, and Ben (the original) ...as it currently stands, there’s no ‘new’ Mara, and no happy times at any point for Luke (off hand comment about balance, the only exception)
The old EU had its flaws, but it had its diamonds too. And I am not sure Maras fate really counts as ‘fridging’ which is something I can see it being accused of. It’s very much the opposite of fridging.
Shame we won’t get to see Ben settle down with the Sith girl I can’t remember the name of. I was just starting to enjoy that.

I'm very happy with what we're getting, so I don't think we would have been better off with direct EU adaptations with recast characters.
The EU books were good, and could have been turned into good movies, but I also can't fault the people in charge of the franchise for wanting to do their own thing.

The thing that gets me is that Zahn pretty much kickstarted the whole EU and created some of the most popular and memorable characters that would would have fit in very well on screen with the rest. While I wasn't too happy about Disney ditching the entire EU, I do understand their reasons for doing so. But at the same time, I wish Zahn would have been acknowledged all he had done by using a character or two of his in the current trilogy.

Assuming it could have been done without miles and years of legal loopholes...

Given what we've seen so far with the sequel trilogy, does anyone think Disney would have been better off keeping the EU, recasting the original actors, and making Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy as the sequels?

As much as I loath the direction the sequels have gone in, I would still have to vote no to every part of that idea.

Yes, we need insane clones with the same names as their genetic source except with double vowels.

When it comes to several-years-later follow-ups to the OT, I actually preferred "Dark Empire" over the novels.

Those comics seemed to be the, ahem, dark horse of the Star Wars EU, as the novels completely ignored them for quite some time, and ardent fans of the novels seemed to be completely unaware of the events of Dark Empire!

It's so long ago I have trouble remembering how it went down, but I think I read Zahn's novels before I picked up DE; I remember reading Zahn's comments about Coruscant recovering from the Empire's 'World Devastators' and thinking I'd missed something along the way. DE filled it in, of course. There was a lot about DE I liked and an equal amount I didn't like.

Not to mention, the Luke Skywalker in Dark Empire knew how to Force Project without dying.

Maybe Johnson should try reading books instead of just lifting from them.
