"Give the American people a black Orphan Annie?!?!" OK they will...

I'm only posting this because of Boston Legal. In the first episode....

You talk about racial equality, how we're making progress. The problem with that progress is it's always a day away. Tomorrow, tomorrow-you love that!-because it's always a day away. I'm here to stick out my chin today! Today! Give us an African-American Spider Man! Give us a black that can run faster than a speeding bullet and leap over tall buildings in a single bound! Not tomorrow-today! Today! The sun needs to come out today! Not tomorrow, your Honor! God Almighty! Give the American people a black Orphan Annie. It's just not good enough to say she doesn't look the part. - Reverend Al Sharpton[/FONT]

Turns out we will get a black orphan Annie!

There are times when we wonder if, in the year, 2026, every film will be populated with progenies of the Smith family, more talented than the rest of us, just poppin' and havin' a good time. Jaden Smith, in his third film (and his first as star), was fun, likable and suprisingly adept at kicking in "The Karate Kid," which just so happened to be the 11th top-grossing movie of last year with $176 million in domestic ticket sales. He did this at the age of 11. Willow Smith became a viral sensation -- so strange, to think of a member of that family as a viral sensation -- with her "Whip My Hair" song, which was goofy and silly and found itself winding through your cerebral cortex on repeat whether you liked it or not. She did that at the age of nine. These two are just getting started. Prepare thyself. The next step in their impending world domination: Willow's ascension to the family film throne. Sony Pictures confirmed today that it's developing a remake of "Annie" with Willow Smith as the star, to be produced by her parents' company Overbrook Entertainment and another rapper of some renown named Jay-Z, who once sampled the musical's "It's The Hard Knock Life." (“The time is right to bring back "Annie" to the big screen. Of course, we’re true believers in Willow's talent and believe she will be perfect in this role,” said the studio's president in a statement, sounding almost giddy to continue to be in the Smith family business.) It is not known yet if daddy Will Smith will play Daddy Warbucks, but such a pairing seems inevitable. Smith starred with Jaden in "The Pursuit Of Happyness," in what might have been the best performance for both members of the family. It seems a natural fit. Willow's version of "Tomorrow" seems genetically engineered to top the pop charts.

The project appears to have been selected with the care that "The Karate Kid" was. Like "Kid," "Annie" is a globally recognized brand name, in a role that doesn't demand deep emoting from its lead character but allows her to let her true star qualities and charisma shine. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are raising their children to be box office stars before they're old enough to notice the opposite sex, and they're doing it in a smart, box-office friendly way. By the age of 20, we're pretty sure Congress will pass a law allowing Willow and Jaden to be President and Vice President, respectively, while they simultaneously star as ninjas who fight aliens. We can't wait to watch all of it.

She can't sing, so hopefully she can act.

The whole thing reads like a typical jealous knee-jerk diatribe.

Say what you want about Kung-f ... Err "Karate" Kid, but it was actually a very well made film.

And dollars to donuts both kids find something better to do with their lives and are completely out of entertainment by the time they're 16.

Re: "Give the American people a black Orphan Annie?!?!" OK they will.

The Smith kids seem well raised and Jaden Smith was great in The Karate Kid, Willow Smith I've not seen in anything yet but if she's anything like her brother she should be a decent little actress too. Any "problems" she might have when it comes to singing can be corrected by either voice-coaching or just getting a real singer to dub in.

Not sure if this movie will be one I'll go see but I've got a degree or two of "confidence" in the Smith family and their children.

Wasn't this an episode of Boston Legal?

Does anyone here actually read what I post? Maybe I should write some posts like "ajkhfejhisdf sghdhgfsdhas gh" and see if anyone notices.

I love Jaden Smith, he has showed me he can act.

So far all I know of Willow Smith is that her single is crap, horrible crap.

I probably will rent the movie, but I love the fact Boston Legal's first episode dealt with this in a play form and now we get a movie. Maybe the (great) show helped. ;)

Well, fix the "Font" tags in the OP and it might make it a bit more readable. But, yeah, that poster should have seen the BL references in the OP.

Great, here comes the backlash over this from conservative white America that will be the same as the bitching over Idris Elba being Balder in the Thor movie, and from younger Asian-Americans over whites being cast in the major roles in The Last Avatar movie.

Seems people NEVER learn.

I'm reddish haired, the father of a red-haired daughter. And frankly, I couldn't give a shit if Annie is played by a black, Japanese, Chinese or blonde actress. Really, if anyone gets their knickers in a twist over this, they have too much time on their hands.

Re: "Give the American people a black Orphan Annie?!?!" OK they will.

As long as they set it in the modern day there won't be any suspension of disbelief issues.

If anyone knows about a 'hard knock life' it has to be Willow Smith. Poor girl, glad to see she's making something out of her rough beginnings.

Frankly the best thing about The Last Airbender was the actors at least looked like their cartoon counter parts. But they couldn't act, or maybe it was the script was so bad. Either way I really hope Willow Smith can act, we shall see.

If not everyone should watch the Boston Legal pilot anyways. :)

To be fair, casting white people as the main characters in Air Bender and the Middle-Eastern actor as the bad guy is kind of.... dickish and easily read the wrong way. You might also be able to argue that they're comic book characters and could argue that they should have been played by actors who somewhat match the characters they are based off of.

This is where I disagree with Rev. Jackson's (and really, I don't need more reason to disagree with the guy) portrayal here where he says something like, "Give us a black Spider-man!"

Spider-man, like the TLAB characters, is "supposed to be" white. That's just how his character is portrayed. And while the same arguments could be made for Annie I'd also argue her character is a little less ingrained into popular culture as Spider-man is or, hell, even The Last Airbender characters.

There's enough "court of public expectation" to make Annie a black girl. Hell, if Annie was black and Daddy Warbucks white it might actually improve the story and make it that much more meaningful.

And for a quick recap of the Boston Legal episode/pilot for those who have not seen it and likely won't take the opportunity to see it but are curious anyway:

In the episode the black child auditioned for a local theater's run of Little Orphan Annie and was pretty well liked by those conducting the audition. They ended up going with a (white) girl who also auditioned and whom the black girl's mother claimed wasn't as good as her daughter and then claimed that the producers passed over her daughter because of race.

Alan Shore is tasked with this case, pretty much set-up to fail, because in all "reality" those producing the musical have the "right" to hire whomever they want in this context. Alan fears he will lose the case, the law is not on his side, but Rev. Jackson makes the impromptu appearance and gives the speech. Apparently this gets the suits behind the musical to meet with Alan and the little girl in arbitration where they settle out of court. The black girl gets the role of understudy and also guaranteed a special "understudy" show one night a week, or something along those lines.

Liberal Harry Knowles, over at AICN, is having a fit about this, because there are so few heroic red haired comic strip characters.

Somewhere, Archie Andrews cries.

I think he mentioned Archie as one of the others. Along with Jimmy Olsen (who, ironically enough, has never been played by a red haired to my knowledge)

He mentioned Popeye as well - who the hell ever knew Popeye was a ginger?!?

:wtf:

Re: "Give the American people a black Orphan Annie?!?!" OK they will.

I don't think the American people are really clamoring for any version of 'Little Orphan Annie.'
