"Give the American people a black Orphan Annie?!?!" OK they will...

Re: "Give the American people a black Orphan Annie?!?!" OK they will.

I don't think the American people are really clamoring for any version of 'Little Orphan Annie.'

Yup. I don't know who was last cast as Annie. I don't know who next will be cast. And it doesn't matter, I won't be seeing it, I saw a version as a kid and that's good enough for me. Cast who you want, casting people! :)

Re: "Give the American people a black Orphan Annie?!?!" OK they will.

Liberal Harry Knowles, over at AICN, is having a fit about this, because there are so few heroic red haired comic strip characters.

Somewhere, Archie Andrews cries.

I think he mentioned Archie as one of the others. Along with Jimmy Olsen (who, ironically enough, has never been played by a red haired to my knowledge)
Harry needs to turn in his geek card for not mentioning Jean Grey.

I've seen a few blacks who were gingers, so its not exactly impossible for Annie to be both.

He mentioned Popeye as well - who the hell ever knew Popeye was a ginger?!?

:wtf:

Who knew that Popeye even had hair?
Olive

Pubes don't count.

If anyone knows about a 'hard knock life' it has to be Willow Smith. Poor girl, glad to see she's making something out of her rough beginnings.

 But seriously, do actors really need to experience the life their character had before they can play the role?

This is where I disagree with Rev. Jackson's (and really, I don't need more reason to disagree with the guy) portrayal here where he says something like, "Give us a black Spider-man!"

Spider-man, like the TLAB characters, is "supposed to be" white. That's just how his character is portrayed. And while the same arguments could be made for Annie I'd also argue her character is a little less ingrained into popular culture as Spider-man is or, hell, even The Last Airbender characters.

:vulcan:

Supposed to be white? I was in the group thinking that Donald Glover would make an awesome Spiderman. He's in a suit, his color doesn't matter.

Annie's color doesn't matter either except for one part, her hair. I have never met a naturally red headed black girl.

So I can argue that Annie needs to be white more than Spiderman. :p

However this whole thing is silly, as soon as I read the news story I care about Annie, I just really love Boston Legal.
